Learning alongside Reception children gives Lord Scudamore’s nursery a distinctive place within the school. The children share a classroom from the start, making the surroundings and older peers familiar before the next stage of education. Familiarity matters here.
This is teacher-led provision for three- and four-year-olds at Lord Scudamore Primary Academy in Hereford. The nursery team includes teaching assistants and a lunchtime supervisor, placing classroom learning and midday care within the same school setting.
A shared classroom is the defining physical feature. Nursery children learn alongside Reception pupils, so their introduction to school includes daily familiarity with that learning environment. For children needing help with communication, play with other children is also used to develop interaction. Adults demonstrate listening and adapt their vocabulary to the child’s understanding, giving those children ways to participate with their peers.
In February 2023, Ofsted found that children across early years picked up everyday routines promptly. That finding concerns early years collectively; it is useful evidence about routines, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Additional needs can be raised before a child starts. The nursery application asks about development and medical concerns, with space to identify difficulties involving hearing, vision, movement, language or separation from parents. This gives families a practical opportunity to explain what their child may need.
Support involves the class teacher and the federation’s SENCo. HMFA funds Wordful Speech Therapy, whose work is mainly within EYFS and includes observing and assessing speech and language difficulties. Children with SEND have an Individual Provision Map, reviewed with parents each term, so support has agreed next steps and a regular point for discussion.
For children attending all day, a hot lunch can be purchased through Parent Pay. An optional Lunchtime Club is also offered, with charges paid weekly in advance. Ask the school for current charges before choosing these extras.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and confers no priority under the 2026/27 admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application through Herefordshire Council’s primary admissions route. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle has passed.
The classroom arrangement supports familiarity, not entitlement to a place. Transition also includes summer visits for children and parents to meet staff and become acquainted with school, plus the option of a home visit. These preparations sit separately from the admissions decision.
The 30-hour attendance pattern runs from 9am to 3pm each day. Families can also request morning, afternoon or all-day attendance, with preferences accommodated where possible. Confirm the booked attendance pattern when accepting a place.
Three- and four-year-olds have an entitlement of up to 15 funded hours each week across 38 weeks. Eligible working families can claim an additional 15 hours, bringing the total to 30.

Bike racks are provided; families travelling by car are asked to use a nearby car park because school parking is reserved for staff and official visitors.
