Nursery at Wellington Primary School and Nursery

Hedgehogs has its base in Wellington’s newer school buildings, with Forest School and a sensory garden among the outdoor features on the wider site. This is the school’s own nursery, managed by the Board of Trustees within Fern Academy Trust. Its staffing structure includes a nursery manager and a nursery teaching assistant, giving families distinct nursery roles within the larger school team.
Play helps determine what children learn next. Staff observe children’s activities, then plan learning around their interests and individual needs. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework organising its areas of learning. In practical terms here, observation connects what a child is already exploring with the next activity staff plan for them.
Early sound learning is a focus from nursery onwards. Science takes place through topics and connects with other learning, rather than standing apart as a separate subject. Together, these approaches bring early language work and exploration into the nursery curriculum. Nursery and Reception staff also collaborate on children’s early years experience.
Reading corners across the classrooms contain changing selections of fiction, poetry and information books, giving books a physical place in the learning environment. Beyond the classroom, the school grounds include a climbing frame, grass, a playground, Forest School and a sensory garden. These are features of the wider school site, providing a useful picture of the nursery’s surroundings.
Settling starts before the first nursery term: prospective nursery children receive home visits. Parents can also arrange to see the school and meet staff beforehand. That creates an opportunity to discuss the child before attendance begins. Before a child starts nursery, parents must sign a registration form covering personal and care information, including emergency contacts, allergies and dietary needs.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school uses individual education plans to record targets and interventions. Families help agree these plans, making the intended support something parents can discuss and review. The school’s speech and language team includes a part-time therapist and a part-time therapy assistant; interventions may also be delivered by a class teaching assistant with the team’s guidance.
The Student and Family Support team can meet families to discuss concerns and direct them towards further help where needed. Parents with concerns about learning or physical development can approach the class teacher or SENCo, the special educational needs coordinator.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and it gives no Reception admission priority. Families must make a separate application through Herefordshire’s online common application process. For entry in the 2027/2028 academic year, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Choosing Hedgehogs therefore leaves a separate school-place decision ahead.
Preparation for that move is a different matter. Children starting Reception in September are offered summer-term taster sessions and a home visit involving the class teacher and a member of the student support team. These provide opportunities to become familiar with the next stage; they do not change the admission rules.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01432 830264 or email admin@wellington.hereford.sch.uk. Prospective parents can make an appointment to visit and meet staff. Telephoning beforehand helps establish staff availability, so the visit can include a conversation with the relevant team.
The nursery registration form records session arrangements alongside the child’s care information. Ask the school for current charges. Keep the nursery registration and the later Reception application as separate tasks when planning your child’s start and next step.
