Rhymes, stories and Forest School give Burhill’s nursery day its shape, with time for children’s own activity between short teaching sessions. This is the school’s nursery provision for three and four year olds, on New Berry Lane in Hersham. Its practical choice is between two split-week patterns and a five-day place, rather than simply mornings or afternoons throughout the week.
The 2025/2026 nursery timetable combines brief maths or literacy sessions with longer periods of continuous provision. In parent language, that means blocks of activity between the scheduled teaching, stories and care routines. Reading independently, registering themselves and washing hands begin the morning; maths and literacy then alternate across the week. Targeted interventions sit alongside continuous provision, allowing additional support within the session’s structure.
Books recur throughout the day. Library time falls on Mondays and Fridays, while the morning includes rhyme-time, phonics and a story before lunch. Afternoon stories alternate between fiction and non-fiction. Children therefore encounter both imaginative storytelling and books about real subjects, rather than having reading confined to one slot.
Forest School takes the Monday and Friday afternoon slots, with PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These are concrete differences between attendance patterns: a split-week place gives a child a different combination of sessions from five-day attendance. The day also makes room for tidying and handwashing, so practical routines sit alongside learning.
In January 2023, early language was a priority, and nursery children enjoyed poems and rhymes. Small responsibilities mattered too: children could take the fruit bowl monitor role. That gives them a specific job within nursery life.
Home visits form part of starting nursery. Where additional needs are already known, the SENDCo joins the visit, giving families an opportunity to discuss support before their child starts. Nursery teaching staff work alongside teaching assistants and EYFS support staff.
Speech and language assessment includes every nursery child, using WELCOMM to identify difficulties that may need extra help. For nursery concerns, staff can seek advice from an Early Years Advisor or refer families to portage services such as Positive Play, which can support them at home. These are distinct routes for understanding a child’s needs and arranging further help.
A calm corner in every classroom provides cushions, sensory toys and calming visuals, giving children a quieter place when they need to settle their emotions. Parents can share learning at termly EYFS Open Mornings. Children on the SEND register have individual support plans, with termly discussions about targets and progress.
Snack breaks occur in both the morning and afternoon, with lunch between them. Families supply information about dietary requirements, allergies and medical conditions when applying, bringing those needs into the conversation from the outset.
Reception admission is separate. A nursery place does not guarantee a place at Burhill Primary School. Families must apply again through the normal school admission process by the applicable deadline. Surrey residents apply through Surrey County Council; families living elsewhere use their home local authority. For September 2027 entry, nursery attendance confers no oversubscription priority.
Transition support is a separate matter. Children moving within the school have a morning with their next teacher in the new classroom, and staff hold handover discussions. Some nursery children with additional needs may be referred to ASPIRE, where SENDCos discuss support and specialist teachers follow up after the move. Familiarity and preparation help with the change; they do not determine admission.
The two 15-hour patterns are Monday and Tuesday, 9am to 3pm, plus Wednesday, 9am to noon; or Wednesday, noon to 3pm, plus Thursday and Friday, 9am to 3pm. Five-day attendance runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. Preferences are subject to availability, so families should distinguish their preferred pattern from the place actually offered.
Eligible families can use the 30-hour funded entitlement, with an HMRC eligibility code required before a 30-hour place is offered. Another five-day option combines 15 funded hours with 15 paid hours. If extended eligibility ends, families can return to the core 15-hour offer or pay for the additional hours. Refer to the school for current charges.
