Playdough sandcastles turn subtraction into something children can see and handle. That practical approach gives Hertford Prep’s early years provision its character: language, numbers and growing independence develop through activities with a clear purpose.
The nursery belongs to the independent school in Hertingfordbury, on St Mary's Lane. At the ISI inspection of 17 to 19 June 2025, provision included one Nursery class. The early years findings cover the nursery within the school’s wider provision, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Early learning brings together conversation, number work, physical skills and learning to play with others. Adults use songs and storytelling, demonstrating vocabulary that children can then try themselves. Letter sounds receive focused teaching. These are concrete foundations for communicating needs and beginning to understand written language.
Number activities make abstract ideas tangible. In June 2025, children caught plastic number shapes and pressed them into playdough to create pretend sandcastles. Imagining the sea removing castles helped them explore subtraction. Counting also involved putting coins into a piggy bank, linking quantities with an everyday object.
Pencils and scissors give children opportunities to practise precise hand movements; bikes and scooters develop balance. Adults teach children how to grip drawing tools, so making marks involves learning a useful technique as well as experimenting with colour.
Social learning has equally practical examples. Staff demonstrate kind ways of speaking and help children practise sharing, working together and negotiating. Children also share cultural traditions, while parents contribute stories in other languages and presentations. This brings family experiences into learning and gives children opportunities to encounter different ways of life.
There is a qualification to the work on money. The June 2025 inspection identified insufficient depth in economic education, which begins in the early years. Counting coins is a starting point; the recommended development was fuller understanding appropriate to pupils’ ages.
Independence extends to small care routines. In June 2025, early years staff helped children learn to manage their shoes and socks and blow their noses. Children were also encouraged to explain their emotions, with adult guidance when they felt disappointed or upset. Practical self-care and expressing feelings both receive attention.
Staff identified children needing extra help with communication promptly. Regular meetings gave the early years team professional guidance, supporting the adults responsible for children’s learning.
Supervision and first aid provide further reassurance. In June 2025, staffing in the early years met the required statutory levels, and an adult with paediatric first aid training was always on duty there.
