A reading corner children can use during free flow, familiar stories revisited across the half term, and adults who make time for conversation: language gives Thundridge’s nursery its clearest character. This is the nursery within Thundridge Church of England Primary School, with both 15-hour and 30-hour places.
The school’s Christian values are curiosity, compassion and courage. It aims to encourage children to try unfamiliar things, persist through mistakes and treat others kindly. Early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Stories and listening come before formal reading instruction. Nursery children listen to sounds around them, hear stories and encounter the writing they see in everyday life. These are the beginnings of the school’s reading approach, which uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. The emphasis for nursery children is on developing the listening and language that later reading will need.
Favourite 5 books are selected each half term for early years children and read repeatedly. Familiarity helps children recognise storytelling patterns and join in with language they know. Adults read to every age group daily, and nursery children can choose books in the reading corner during free flow. The selection changes regularly, giving them fresh reasons to return.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, the framework for children’s early development and learning. In March 2023, language development was a clear strength: adults helped children communicate, listen to one another and contribute to conversations. Activities introduced letters and numbers alongside opportunities to investigate, work together and solve problems. The day’s learning therefore extends beyond early reading to talking through ideas with other children.
For children needing additional support, the school aims to plan around the child and family. Its approach includes individual learning plans, agreed targets and opportunities for children to express their views. Families can contact the special educational needs coordinator through the school office, giving them a direct route into discussions about support.
Discuss nursery food arrangements with the school office before deciding what to send from home.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for a school place are separate decisions; familiarity with the setting should not be treated as an admission entitlement.
The nursery offers 15-hour and 30-hour places, and applications for a September start can be made throughout the year. School visits can be arranged through the office. For enquiries, telephone 01920 462642 or email admin@thundridge.herts.sch.uk.
Uniform is expected, but branded clothing is optional. Kids Connection in Hertford is the main supplier; families can also buy uniform from other retailers, including supermarkets. That leaves flexibility over where to shop while keeping the school’s uniform requirement.
