Nursery at Hessle High School and Penshurst Primary School

Fairy tales give Penshurst’s nursery a distinctive starting point: stories belong to the youngest children’s learning, alongside developing the confidence to communicate and share. This is the nursery provision within Hessle High School and Penshurst Primary School, part of The Hessle Academy in Hessle. The school’s provision begins at age three.
At the April and May 2024 inspection, the nursery had 52 places. That figure describes the provision’s size at that time, rather than the number of vacancies now. For parents, the nursery’s identity is the useful distinction: this is an early start within a school, with classroom and playtime routines already part of children’s experience.
Language is a clear thread in the early years day. At the inspection on 30 April and 1 May 2024, children were eager to learn, willing to share and familiar with what happened during class and playtimes. Staff helped them develop communication and language effectively. Those findings matter for a young child learning to express an idea, join others in an activity or understand what comes next.
Fairy tales are a concrete example of nursery learning. They give children stories to listen to and talk about, making the emphasis on communication more tangible than a general promise about school readiness. The strongest picture here is of learning through language and familiar routines.
On the primary site, outdoor areas supported purposeful play in April and May 2024. That is a finding about the primary environment, rather than a description of a separate nursery garden. It gives families useful context about the school setting around the nursery.
The Thrive Approach provides a named framework for emotional support across the trust’s schools. The trust describes it as an approach for the whole school, intended to help staff recognise social and emotional needs and respond to them. For families, its relevance is the attention given to relationships and feelings alongside learning.
Special educational needs and disabilities are also covered by a trust SEND policy that applies across its schools. This establishes the wider framework around Penshurst’s nursery; it should not be confused with a description of an individual child’s support arrangements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step, even when your child is already familiar with the school.
The Academy’s general contact details are office@hessleacademy.com and 01482 648604. These provide a central point of contact for families considering the nursery.
Keep the nursery decision and the later Reception application separate when planning your child’s schooling. Familiarity with classroom routines is part of the early years experience; it is not an assurance of admission.
The nursery had 52 places at the inspection on 30 April and 1 May 2024. This is a dated capacity figure, not a statement about current vacancies.
