Communication and independence give the early years at St Anne's their direction. The nursery belongs to a school for children with additional needs in Hessle, where education begins from age two and the school as a whole serves ages 2 to 19. This is provision within a specialist school setting.
Across the school, a Total Communication Approach supports learning. St Anne's aims to help children express preferences and communicate what they need, with adults respecting their choices. For a young child, that makes being understood an important part of the educational purpose, alongside developing independence.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework, alongside Birth to 5 matters and Development matters. Individual needs shape the school's curriculum planning. In June 2023, the curriculum extending from early years onwards was broad and adapted to pupils' needs, giving children learning shaped around their development.
Personal, social and health education begins in early years. Stories and games sit alongside practical activities and discussion within the school's approach. Understanding emotions, keeping safe and building independence are among its themes; these connect learning with the skills children use in daily life.
The wider school building includes a sensory integration room, sensory rooms, a rebound therapy room and a hydrotherapy pool. These are school facilities rather than a description of a nursery session. Outdoor learning. The inspection on 27 and 28 June 2023 called for more opportunities for early-years children to learn outdoors. Families should weigh that specific development point alongside the school's specialist physical spaces.
A communication team forms part of the school staff structure, alongside class teachers and staff who train colleagues in moving and handling. Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) also work across the school, supporting children with understanding feelings and managing emotions. These are school-wide roles.
St Anne's says its care should protect children's privacy, allow time for communication and encourage children to do things independently where possible. It also aims to involve parents in planning for their child. That makes individual care and family involvement part of its stated expectations for staff.
Class Dojo provides two-way communication across the school, including photographs and updates for parents. It gives families a way to maintain contact with the teaching team beyond face-to-face conversations.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery and Reception admissions are separate: families must apply again through the appropriate normal process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing the next school place as separate decisions, even when considering continued education at St Anne's.
Boothferry Road, Hessle, HU13 9AR is the school's address. School pupil hours are 9.15am to 3.15pm, Monday to Friday; these are school hours, rather than a nursery session booking model.
