At a Glance

Specialist sport and performing arts start early at Pennthorpe: Honey Pot and Beehive children use the MUGA, Sports Hall and Performing Arts studios. These are nursery groups with access to school facilities, giving young children different spaces for movement and expression.

Honey Pot caters for ages 2–3, while Beehive is the pre-Reception year. The nursery forms part of Pennthorpe School in Rudgwick. In August 2021, nursery limits were 12 children in Honeypot and up to 24 in Beehive. These are capacity limits, rather than attendance figures.

The Nursery Day

Conversation and independent play give the day its educational shape. At the ISI inspection of 25 to 27 November 2025, early-years teaching matched activities to children's developmental stages, with role play, discussion and problem-solving helping them practise language. Independent play also gave children opportunities to explain their decisions. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here combines communication, physical development and learning to play together.

Indoor and outdoor learning spaces support that work. In November 2025, children used outdoor equipment for shared play and developed strength and coordination through specialist PE. Creative activities exercised smaller movements too: shaping clay hedgehogs and cutting both curves and straight lines helped develop hand control. Learning had practical purposes. A market stall introduced coins and money, while a superhero topic included a fire-station visit to explore public services.

Music Bus adds a named example of nursery activity. In April 2024, Honey Pot children sang about farm animals, played instruments and practised changing their volume in response to instructions. That combines making music with listening carefully. Alongside the classroom play, visits to specialist sport and performing arts spaces give children opportunities to use their bodies and express ideas in different ways.

Care and Support

Settling begins with a chance to try nursery life. Nursery-age children can have a short taster, potentially an hour or a morning, before families make their final decision. In August 2021, the pre-entry arrangements also included a stay-and-play session during the preceding term, allowing children and parents to meet teachers and become familiar with the nursery surroundings.

By November 2025, early-years children settled readily and joined activities with confidence. Staff supported individual developmental needs and maintained consistent communication with parents. Sharing materials, taking turns and helping one another were part of children's play, giving social learning a concrete place in the day. Early-years staff had paediatric first-aid training, and staffing ratios were suitable.

Hot lunches and freshly baked snacks are included in core-day fees, as are stationery and learning resources. This makes food and everyday classroom materials part of the core arrangement. For additional learning needs, Pennthorpe screens every child from age 3; individual SEND programmes record targets, teaching strategies and provision, with parents involved in reviews.

Moving On to Reception

Progression has an important condition. In August 2021, entry to Reception was automatic for children moving up from Beehive, except where identified learning needs could not reasonably be met at Pennthorpe. Nursery attendance therefore does not provide an unconditional guarantee of a Reception place. Families should confirm progression with the Admissions team before relying on that arrangement.

For children joining Reception from elsewhere, applications go directly to Pennthorpe. Applications can be made at any time, with remaining Reception places allocated in application order and a taster used to assess children's needs. This independent-school route differs from a local-authority Reception application.

Practical Information

Attendance commitment. In August 2021, Honeypot required at least 3 sessions each week and Beehive 5. After a place and start date were agreed, the Registrar confirmed sessions and wraparound requirements with parents.

Nursery supervision extends from 7:30am to 6:00pm. The Extended Day provision includes Breakfast Club and after-school supervision, allowing care around the nursery day. Wraparound care carries an additional charge; contact Pennthorpe for current charges.

Funding pattern. Universal early education provides up to 15 hours weekly from the term after a child's third birthday, across 38 weeks nationally. Pennthorpe families can claim up to 33 weeks, aligned with its academic year, and funding applies to certain parts of the day. Unused weekly hours can be claimed with another registered provider.

Honey Pot and Beehive have nursery uniform, with nursery sports kit obtainable through the onsite shop. To enquire or arrange a private tour, contact admissions@pennthorpe.com or 01403 822391; visits can also be booked using the visit form.
