Nursery at Slinfold CofE Primary School and Pre School

A purpose-built classroom, shared school facilities and an outdoor area linking younger children with the next stage give Brook Class its character. This is the pre-school within Slinfold CofE Primary School and Pre School, with places for children aged two and three. Children participate in school events as well as using the facilities, so their experience extends beyond their own classroom.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 26 and 27 September 2023. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play shapes the learning. Activities are matched to children's development and interests, with the pre-school describing its approach as centred on each child. The purpose-built classroom provides the indoor base; outdoors, the children share a learning area with Hamble Class. This brings the nursery day into contact with the wider school while retaining a distinct class identity.
Language has a specific programme: Song of Sounds Stage 0. Its short games and activities take no more than 5–10 minutes daily. Rhymes, drama, poems and stories develop listening, speaking and understanding within the communication and language strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Letter sounds follow when children are ready. The emphasis is on building language before moving further into phonics.
In September 2023, children in the pre-school and early years had opportunities to explore numbers and counting, helping develop their interest in mathematics. Early years children generally sustained their attention and could learn independently or alongside a small group. Those are useful foundations for participating in a session, rather than simply completing adult-directed tasks.
A Languages Day gives a concrete example of learning through experience: Brook children explored Italian colours and names, then made pizza, breadsticks and Italian lemon cake. Food preparation and language came together in one activity.
Brook Class has a pre-school lead, key workers and a role providing individual support. This gives families a nursery team within the larger school's staffing structure.
For children needing additional help, the school's SEND arrangements include adapted resources and support individually or in groups. Assess-Plan-Do-Review is used to monitor that help, with spoken and written updates for parents and carers. Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists may also contribute. A purpose-built sensory room adds a physical space to the school's support provision; families can discuss SEND with the inclusion team through the office.
Parents supply care consumables, including nappies and cream. Lunch-inclusive session choices also allow families to extend a morning or begin an afternoon earlier.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; school places are handled by West Sussex County Council's admissions team.
The practical connection is different from the admissions decision. Brook shares school facilities and an outdoor learning area with Hamble Class, while the school describes communication between the teams as supporting transition. Familiar surroundings can help with the change of class, but they do not secure admission.
The pre-school operates during term time, five days each week. A full day runs from 8:40am to 3:10pm. Morning attendance is 8:40am to 11:40am, or until 12:10pm with lunch; afternoons run from 12:10pm to 3:10pm, or begin at 11:40am with lunch. Families can typically combine mornings and afternoons or use full days, subject to availability.
All children qualify for 15 funded hours weekly from the term after their third birthday. Funding from age two depends on family circumstances and government criteria. The pre-school also accepts 30-hour funding codes each term, with places subject to availability. The extra half hour in the school day carries a charge; contact the office for current charges. Fees remain payable during absence, and reserving a non-funded waiting-list place requires a non-refundable deposit.
Enquiries go through the school office on 01403 790253. School tours can be booked there in advance and typically take place on Monday mornings at 9am. Pre-school logo uniform can be ordered through Taylor Made Uniforms, and clothing should be labelled with the child's initial and surname.
The pre-school has places for two-year-old and three-year-old children and forms part of Slinfold CofE Primary School and Pre School.
