Nursery at Woodlea Primary School

A large nursery classroom and a garden shared with Reception give Woodlea’s nursery a clear place within school life. Children can join from the term after their third birthday, and the nursery is part of Woodlea Primary School in Fence Houses. Its nursery teacher also holds the EYFS leadership role, linking the class with leadership of the early years provision.
The practical choice is between morning, afternoon and full-day attendance. Woodlea offers 15-hour places across mornings or afternoons, alongside 30-hour full days for eligible parents. These are distinct attendance patterns, so families can choose between a shorter session and a longer nursery day.
Play shapes the learning here. Woodlea believes young children learn best through a mixture of activities structured by adults and play they initiate themselves. Themes connect different areas of learning, take account of children’s interests and develop skills towards their next steps. That gives children room to pursue an interest alongside teaching with a specific purpose.
Maths and literacy combine games with focused tasks. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives this work its framework: speaking and understanding, physical development, and social and emotional development come first. These support later learning in reading and writing, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, the emphasis is on developing the skills that make further learning possible, rather than treating early education as a collection of separate subjects.
The large classroom is complemented by the shared garden, where nursery and Reception children learn and play together. This creates opportunities to interact with children from the next class. An Early Reading workshop takes place in the autumn term, helping parents understand expectations and support learning at home.
Class Dojo connects classroom learning with home. Teachers share photographs, learning information and reminders through class pages, and parents can message their child’s teacher during normal working hours. It gives families a practical way to keep up with activities and raise questions between conversations with staff.
For children with SEND, Woodlea asks parents to discuss identified needs before starting so that support can be planned. Across the school, teachers, support staff and the SENCO work together on individual needs. Parents participate through discussions, termly meetings and reviews of support plans. This makes the family’s knowledge of their child part of the planning process.
The school’s approach includes adapting resources and breaking tasks into smaller steps. Physical access includes level pupil entrances, an accessible toilet and a designated parking area for disabled users. Families also provide health information, dietary requirements and food allergies before admission, giving staff information needed to plan for individual care needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process, coordinated by Durham County Council, and follow the normal application deadline. Choose the nursery for the experience it offers now, while treating the later school application as a separate decision.
The shared garden provides everyday contact with Reception children. Separately, Woodlea’s arrangements for children with SEND moving between classes can include extra classroom visits, an earlier start to transition and classroom photographs to discuss at home. Support is tailored with parents. These measures help children prepare for change; they do not secure admission.
The three attendance options are every morning for 15 hours, every afternoon for 15 hours, or full days totalling 30 hours for eligible parents. The full-day option therefore has an eligibility condition that families need to consider alongside their preferred pattern.
Nursery enquiries and visits can be arranged by calling 0191 3852675. Families can speak with a teacher and arrange to see the provision. An application form is also available for nursery entry, keeping the initial enquiry and application focused on the nursery itself.
