Nursery at Dowson Primary Academy

Outdoor discovery and learning to get along with others give Dowson’s nursery its character. Forest School and life skills feature among its nursery activities, while the wider early years programme includes encounters with animals, nature and the local community. This is the nursery within Dowson Primary Academy on Marlborough Road in Hyde, with funded part-time education available from the term following a child’s third birthday.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 October 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Forest School, life skills and Nursery Sports Day provide concrete examples of children’s experiences here. They bring movement and practical learning into the picture alongside classroom activity. The nursery curriculum also addresses friendship: children learn about making friends, recognising loneliness and asking for help when a friendship upsets them. These are useful skills for a child beginning to share space and play with others.
The Early Years Foundation Stage is the school’s early education framework. Dowson’s own approach adds the Dowson Promise, which sets experiences to complete by the end of early years. These include a farm visit, caring for an animal and performing through speech or song. Exploring wildlife and visiting places of worship broaden the programme beyond classroom learning. These are early years commitments, rather than a timetable of nursery sessions.
Personal learning has a practical focus too. Nursery children explore what they enjoy, what they can do and how people differ. Learning about the people who care for them connects these ideas to familiar relationships, giving children a starting point for talking about themselves and others.
Teachers and teaching assistants work in the nursery. For children needing additional help, the school’s SEND arrangements bring together the class teacher, SEND coordinator and parents. Support can include visual timetables, adult-led group work and changes to the classroom layout. The approach depends on the child’s needs, so these are possible adjustments rather than a standard package for everyone.
Pupil Passports record individual support and are reviewed with families each term. This gives parents a recurring opportunity to discuss progress and changes. Across the school, accessible facilities include ramps and adapted toilets; their relevance to an individual child can be considered alongside classroom support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Reception admissions are coordinated by Enquire Learning Trust, with the ELT Admissions route providing the next step.
Transition support and admission are separate matters. For children with SEND, possible arrangements include additional classroom visits, a familiar adult to check in with and photographs of new people and spaces to take home. Staff also hand over learning information and Pupil Passports, helping the next team understand the child’s support.
Continuity of learning. In October 2022, the Reception curriculum did not consistently extend the foundations established in Nursery. Staff needed to give children more opportunities to consolidate and develop existing skills. For families considering the next stage, continuity of learning deserves attention alongside the practical transition arrangements.
Nursery Wrap Around Care runs from noon to 3:15pm and is chargeable. Dowson’s Den also provides care for children attending the school from 7:30am to 8:50am and from 3:15pm to 6:00pm. These options can extend childcare around the nursery provision.
Bookings for Dowson’s Den use the MCAS app. Cancellations must be more than two weeks ahead; bookings within that period remain chargeable. That makes advance planning important for families whose childcare needs change. Contact the school for current charges.
