Language and independence give Oakfield’s nursery its clearest character. In January 2025, early years teaching combined planned learning with children’s interests, while adults supported communication and knew when to let children try things for themselves. That balance matters for children beginning school life: help is there, but so is room to become more independent.
The nursery belongs to Oakfield Primary and Moderate Learning Difficulties Resource Provision on St Mary’s Road in Hyde. The school’s age range begins at three. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
A 9am start anchors the nursery day. Children attending for 15 hours finish at noon, while those attending for 30 hours stay until 3pm. The two patterns give families a morning or a longer school day, with different collection times to plan around.
Early years learning builds essential knowledge while making space for children’s own interests. In January 2025, staff supported language development effectively and used their training to judge when to guide an activity and when to leave children more room. For parents, the useful distinction is between adult support and adults doing too much: independence is part of the learning.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the school’s named phonics programme, with teaching beginning in Nursery/Reception. Nursery children develop the preparatory skills for phonics, making speaking and listening an important foundation for later reading. The emphasis begins before children are expected to read independently.
Stay and Play sessions give nursery parents opportunities throughout the year to talk about their child’s learning and progress. This brings those conversations into time spent with the class rather than leaving them solely to a formal appointment. Parents can also contact the school by email, telephone or through the office, and the Pastoral Manager can meet families during the school day.
For additional needs, Oakfield has separate SENCo responsibilities for mainstream provision and the SEND units. School support includes speech and language programmes, Colourful Semantics and motor skills programmes, selected according to children’s needs. These are school support options rather than a fixed programme for every nursery child.
Healthcare plans involve parents and healthcare professionals and are shared with the adults working with the child. This gives medical care a specific plan. School meals come from the Enquire Learning Trust’s catering team, with children choosing ahead from a menu rotating over three weeks.
Attending Oakfield’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two decisions: familiarity with the school does not secure admission.
Collection times. The 15-hour pattern ends at noon and the 30-hour pattern at 3pm. Match the nursery collection time to your family’s daily arrangements.
