Nursery at St George's CofE Primary School

Christian values and a place within the school's Early Years Team shape the nursery at St George's in Hyde. Nursery teaching roles include a teacher and teaching partners, placing the provision within a wider school staffing structure. The school aims to help each child feel included, with education responsive to individual needs. For families, its Christian identity is an essential part of the choice.
As part of St George's, the nursery sits within a school that describes learning as enquiry led, connecting questions with purposeful, real-life experiences. Growth Mindset is a named approach: children are encouraged to try, ask questions and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn. The emphasis is on how children approach a challenge as well as what they learn from it.
Building Learning Powers adds another strand to that school-wide approach. St George's aims to help children understand their own learning and make decisions about how to tackle it. Five Ways to Wellbeing also informs curriculum planning, with confidence and self-esteem among the intended benefits. These are the school's educational aims, rather than promises of particular nursery activities.
In March 2023, Ofsted found that early-years staff recognised language and vocabulary difficulties promptly and accurately, then worked with families to arrange additional support. That gives the early-years provision a concrete focus on communication, with parents involved when children need help.
Support extends beyond the nursery teaching team. The school's Inclusion Team covers special educational needs and disabilities, English as an additional language, and emotional or social difficulties. It brings together teaching assistants and external agencies alongside school staff. A SEN teacher is assigned to the Eden Room within the school's support structure; this does not establish an automatic placement there for nursery children.
Before children with an Education Health Care Plan, a pending plan or additional needs start school, parents are invited to discuss suitable provision. This creates an opportunity to explain a child's needs before their first session.
Medication arrangements. Staff participation in giving medicines is voluntary, so families should agree arrangements individually. A parent must hand medication to staff and complete an office consent form. Medicines are kept in a locked office cupboard, while asthma inhalers stay with the class teacher for ready access. Medicine administration involves two people, including a checker. Ongoing medical needs may require a healthcare plan.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child's next year, even if they already attend the nursery.
Nursery gates open at 12:10. This is a gate-opening time, rather than a complete session timetable. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0161 368 2848 or email admin@st-georges-hyde.tameside.sch.uk. The school is on Church Street, Hyde, SK14 1JL.
