Nursery at Downshall Primary School

Two bespoke nursery learning areas and an Early Years Garden give Downshall’s youngest children space to explore. The nursery sits within Downshall Primary School on Meads Lane in Seven Kings, Ilford. Families can choose a morning, afternoon or full-day session, making the length of the day a practical part of the choice.
In March 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. This judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play gives number work a concrete starting point. Nursery children use a maths table, sing number songs and encounter numbers through water and sand activities, games and pretend play. Physical objects and pictures give children practical ways to explore numbers through play. Development Matters informs the early years curriculum.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together. Expressive Arts and Design, one of its seven learning areas, includes experimenting with materials and tools. Activities for three- and four-year-olds include mixing colours, drawing shapes and making cuts with scissors. These combine creative choices with practice in controlling hands and fingers.
Read Write Inc. starts in Nursery, introducing the school’s phonics programme early. Me and My Community and Starry Night are named nursery topics. Across early years, music also runs through daily routines, with opportunities to sing, listen and respond through movement. The garden and outdoor play area add a physical setting for learning through play.
Communication deserves close attention here. In March 2026, early years children were developing independence and learning to share, listen and take turns. However, adult conversations did not consistently extend their language, and some children were hesitant to use newly learned vocabulary. Improving those interactions was an explicit next step. For parents, the useful distinction is between hearing new words and getting enough help to use them.
Support begins before children start. Staff work with families and preschool providers to identify additional needs and arrange help from the outset of early years. In March 2026, leaders still needed to check the impact of SEND support more precisely and adjust strategies using what they learned. This was a school-wide improvement action. That makes conversations about a child’s communication or development relevant before their first session.
A designated safeguarding role covers Early Years and Year 1 within the wider welfare team. September curriculum meetings give parents an opportunity to discuss learning goals and provision for their child’s year group. In March 2026, partnership with parents helped families support early years learning at home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Redbridge’s admissions process; choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
For September 2026 entry, the on-time application deadline was midnight on 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Reception applications are managed by the Redbridge Admissions Team on the school’s behalf, so the nursery application and the Reception application follow separate routes.
Morning sessions run from 9:00am to noon, afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, and full days from 9:00am to 3:30pm. The afternoon start matters for families planning a midday handover; it is a separate session rather than an immediate continuation of the morning.
Both 15- and 30-hour nursery places are offered. Nursery enquiries go to admin.downshall@redbridge.gov.uk or the main office on 0208 590 2157. An application form can also be returned to the office with a copy of the child’s birth certificate. Prospective parents are welcome to arrange a school visit, giving families a concrete next step before choosing their session.
