Play and personal development shape Foundation Nurseries at Farnham Green, an on-site provision for children aged 2-5 in Seven Kings, Ilford. Foundation Nurseries runs the nursery within Farnham Green Primary School. Its emphasis is on early learning through play, with the nursery aiming to build children’s curiosity and confidence.
The school’s nursery curriculum gives making and experimenting a concrete place in learning. Children explore materials, assemble constructions and use drawing to express ideas. Textured paper, thread and fabric become pictures and large weavings; hand printing introduces colour. Talking about their artwork adds another dimension: children connect what they have made with meaning and emotion.
Construction also supports imaginative play. The nursery design and technology curriculum includes building miniature worlds with blocks and construction kits, such as a city with buildings and a park. This brings making and storytelling together, giving children something tangible around which to develop their ideas.
Early technology learning includes investigating mechanisms. Wind-up toys, pulleys and familiar mechanical equipment give children things to investigate. Geography introduces differences between countries through photographs and children’s experiences, while history begins with their own lives, family memories and photographs. These are concrete starting points for talking about the wider world.
Within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), curriculum milestones draw on Development Matters. In parent language, the framework combines communication, movement and social development with early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. Those strands help explain why conversation, construction and artwork belong alongside early number and language learning.
For families raising developmental concerns, the school’s SEND process starts with discussion with the child’s teacher and the special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo). Concerns can originate at home or at school. Support options across the school include small group work, short interventions and specialist outreach, with advice available from speech and language therapists and the Early Years Advisory Service.
Parents participate in planning and reviewing SEND support. The school uses Assess, Plan, Do and Review, with progress reviewed termly with families. This gives parents a defined role in deciding what support should achieve and checking how it is working.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process by the relevant deadline.
Attendance at the on-site Foundation Nurseries provision does confer oversubscription priority: it comes after looked-after and previously looked-after children, qualifying staff children and qualifying siblings, and before distance-based applicants. Priority still leaves an application to make and a place to be allocated. For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027.
Foundation Nurseries describes its childcare as flexible. Families can book a nursery visit through Foundation Nurseries’ Ilford enquiry route. The setting is at Royal Close, Seven Kings, Ilford, IG3 8UY; the school office can be contacted at admin@farnhamgreen.org.uk or on 020 8599 1206.
