Language gives this nursery its character: children learn to put needs into words, build vocabulary and gain confidence in speaking. Gearies takes children from age three, with its nursery attached to the four-form-entry primary school in Gants Hill. The arrangement is a short daily session across five days, rather than a full-day childcare place.
Early years provision was judged Outstanding at the Ofsted inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the nursery-specific emphasis on communication is the more useful detail: expressing a need is part of the learning here.
Three hours shape each session. Families have a morning or afternoon pattern, giving children a regular part-day routine. Gearies offers 15 free hours each week; it does not offer full days or a 30-hour arrangement. This is a practical distinction for anyone fitting nursery around work.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum brings personal development together with learning skills and knowledge. Gearies says it designs this around the children and families it serves, with practitioners, teachers and leaders contributing to its development. The emphasis is on responding to children's starting points and needs, rather than treating the group as interchangeable.
In November 2024, communication was a clear strength from the beginning of nursery. Staff helped children extend their vocabulary and speak confidently about what they needed. Early years learning also included comparing the past with the present. These concrete examples give parents a sense of learning through language and discussion, alongside the social work of sharing and taking turns.
Sharing and turn-taking received close attention in early years in November 2024. These are useful foundations for joining a group: learning involves other children as well as adults. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were also achieving very well within early years at that time.
Beyond the nursery team, the school's Pastoral Support Officer works with families and can involve specialist services in early support. Parenting programmes address behaviour, sleep routines and healthy eating. This gives families a route into support for home routines as well as learning. The school building is accessible to people with physical disabilities.
The Nursery Inclusion Project for All (NIPA) addresses social and economic inequality and its effects on health and education. Gearies aims to develop this work with the Redbridge MHLDA group and NHS North East London ICB. It is a community support ambition, rather than a promise of a particular intervention for every child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the London Borough of Redbridge Admissions Department, using its online application route. Applications cannot be made directly to Gearies. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Each pattern provides three hours a day over five days.
For nursery registration, children must be three by 31 August for the September intake. Registration is through the school office, which can also answer enquiries on 0208 550 1803 or at admin@geariesprimaryschool.co.uk.
The school requires daily uniform, and pre-loved items can be bought through the office, subject to stock. Parking near the school is very limited. Gants Hill station is a seven-minute walk away, making public transport a practical option for the daily journey.
