Nursery at Gordon Primary School

Curiosity and growing independence give Gordon’s early years provision its character. In February 2024, children were working cooperatively and being encouraged to do more for themselves. For parents, that places learning to manage alongside other children firmly within the picture of early education here.
The nursery belongs to Gordon Primary School on Golfe Road in Ilford. Children normally join in September following their third birthday. The Spring Term 2025 admission arrangements describe morning and afternoon groups, with 36 places in each session. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its visit on 7 and 8 February 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Three-hour sessions give the day a clear shape: the morning runs from 8:30am to 11:30am, while the afternoon starts at 12:30pm and finishes at 3:30pm. Both operate Monday to Friday. Families choosing between them therefore have two distinct collection schedules to fit around home life.
Learning in early years follows a curriculum that sets out how knowledge develops over time. In February 2024, its sequence gave teachers a clear order for introducing learning and building on it. Alongside that planned progression, children showed curiosity, practised independence and collaborated with one another. The emphasis includes how children learn together, as well as what they learn.
Starting school is supported by an induction programme and a parent meeting about settling into routines. Under the school’s SEND Information Report, revised in Spring Term 2025, families whose children already have identified special educational needs or disabilities are offered a meeting with the SEND coordinator as part of the school’s entry arrangements. Existing records and information from supporting agencies are requested so that planning can take account of the child’s needs.
Support involves families beyond the initial meeting. The same policy sets out termly reviews of agreed outcomes with parents, and referrals to specialists require parental permission. SEaTSS and speech and language specialists are among the support routes described. These are school-wide arrangements that give nursery families a framework for discussing additional needs.
Physical access measures across the school include a lift and two accessible toilets in the new building. Safeguarding concerns go to designated, trained staff, giving families a defined route for raising welfare concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority. Gordon’s Spring Term 2025 arrangements explicitly separate the two, explaining that children who have not attended its nursery are not disadvantaged in obtaining a Reception place.
Parents must make a separate application through the local authority’s normal process using eAdmissions. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 23:59 on 15 January 2026. Families should treat Reception admission as a separate decision and application, rather than an automatic continuation of nursery attendance.
Nursery application forms are obtained from the school office and returned there. Families considering a place can also contact the school to arrange a visit. The enquiry route is admin.gordon@redbridge.gov.uk or 020 8478 2977.
