Nursery at Mayespark Primary School

Play in the outdoor learning garden and a deliberate focus on language give Mayespark’s nursery its character. This is the starting stage of a primary school on Goodmayes Lane in Goodmayes, Ilford, where the school’s age range begins at three. There are three nursery classes, with 26 morning places and 26 afternoon places. Those are session places, rather than a count of individual children.
Early years provision was judged Good at the Ofsted inspection of 15 and 16 November 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Classroom learning extends into an outdoor learning garden. Much of it happens through play, drawing on experiences children already have. That gives the nursery day a practical starting point: children can explore ideas through activities rather than learning only through adult instruction.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven learning areas. In parent language, these cover talking and listening, relationships and emotions, movement, early reading and writing, maths, discovering the world and creative expression. Communication receives close attention. In November 2023, the early years curriculum and learning spaces gave children opportunities to practise language and build their understanding, helping prepare them for later learning across different starting points and additional needs.
Read Write Inc begins in Nursery. This phonics programme introduces the sounds used in reading, giving families a named approach to follow when supporting their child. Parents are encouraged to practise the sounds their child is learning in the appropriate sequence.
Curriculum connections. In November 2023, work remained to clarify how early years learning should begin the sequence in some subjects. For families, the useful distinction is between the positive language provision and the further work needed to connect that foundation to later subject learning.
Predictable routines help children settle. In November 2023, children in early years adjusted quickly because expectations and daily routines were firmly established. This gives families reassurance about the structure supporting the move into group learning.
For additional needs, parents can begin with their child’s teacher and contact the SEND team through the office. The team holds qualified teacher status. SEND support follows a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review, with progress discussed with parents termly. At school level, physical facilities include a ground-floor Hygiene Room with accessible toilet facilities, giving a concrete basis for discussing a child’s care needs.
Stir Catering provides the school’s hot lunches, with vegetarian and Halal choices. Special dietary requirements involve a referral form obtained through the office. These arrangements make dietary needs part of the planning for a child staying through lunchtime.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Redbridge’s primary school admissions route and meet the deadline for their entry year. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
Transition activities address familiarity rather than admission. Stay and Play sessions take place in June and July for nursery children starting Reception. Parents are also invited to a meeting about settling into school routines, while the SEND team meets incoming families whose children have identified additional needs so that concerns can be discussed before entry.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoon sessions run from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. All-day places are allocated first come, first served and require a valid 30-hour code. For that arrangement, the funded period runs from 8:45am to 2:45pm. Staying until 3:20pm carries an additional charge, paid ahead of each term; ask the school for current charges.
Nursery applications go through the school office, with completed forms returned to office@mayespark.redbridge.sch.uk. Visits can be arranged by calling 0208 599 2263. Children are collected at their classroom door, keeping the handover close to the nursery classroom.
