Where the River Orwell curves through Suffolk into its tidal estuary, Ipswich has served as the county town since the Saxon period, when the settlement was first recorded as Gippeswic and is thought to be one of England's oldest continuously inhabited towns. Around 151,000 people live here today, making it the largest town in Suffolk and the principal population centre of East Anglia beyond Peterborough and Norwich. The Ipswich Waterfront, a regenerated Victorian dock on a meander of the Orwell, anchors restaurants, apartments, and a working marina at the town's southern edge.
Chantry, to the southwest, draws families competing for primary places, while Holbrook has long been one of the most school-competitive pockets in the area. Castle Hill and Martlesham Heath form the main residential belt to the northeast, with Woolverstone stretching south along the river. Greater Anglia trains reach Norwich in under an hour.
