At a Glance

Pond-dipping, trikes and a covered outdoor area give Manor Pre-School a day that can reach well beyond its own play spaces. This is the nursery provision within Manor Primary School’s grounds, with sessions for two-, three- and four-year-olds. It has been run under the school’s leadership and governance since April 2016.

Purpose-built indoor and outdoor facilities provide its own base, while supervised use of the wider grounds brings room for movement and exploration. In July 2025, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection grade.

The Nursery Day

Morning, lunch and afternoon form the main divisions of the day. Families can book shorter sessions or an all-day option, so the pattern can fit around how much time a child spends here.

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) combines learning through language, practical exploration and growing social skills. Weighing activities made mathematical comparisons tangible, with adults helping children put their ideas into complete sentences. A story about a fish also became a starting point for painting, giving books a creative role. Across early years, the July 2025 inspection found strong language development. These examples connect talking, making and mathematical ideas rather than treating them as separate exercises.

Outside, the playground gives children space for trikes and games. An adventure play area sits within the field, and the covered area allows outdoor activity in wet weather. The secret garden includes a pond with decking, used for supervised pond-dipping. Indoor PE takes place in the school hall. There is scope for both energetic play and closer observation of the natural world.

Early reading. In July 2025, inconsistent phonics teaching was a school-level concern: some teaching did not make letter and sound connections clear enough, and checks on understanding needed greater precision. Families should keep that concern distinct from the positive findings about early years language and practical mathematics.

Care and Support

Tapestry carries preschool news and information, giving families a named communication channel. For special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), parents can contact the school’s SENCO through the office email or telephone. The safeguarding lead’s responsibilities cover both the school and pre-school, linking the nursery to the school’s safeguarding structure.

Lunch is eaten with an adult in small groups, with an emphasis on sociable behaviour and manners. Children can bring a healthy packed lunch or have a hot dinner booked through Swift Kitchen. Nuts, sweets and fizzy drinks are excluded. A morning snack is provided, with children sometimes helping to prepare and serve it; milk is offered at break and water during the day.

Daily care requires a little preparation at home. Families provide nappies or pull-ups and associated supplies where needed, together with spare clothing. That keeps changes of clothes and personal care supplies close to hand.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Manor Pre-School does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate: families must make a fresh formal application through the local authority, using Devon County Council’s school admissions route, by the normal deadline.

Children planning to attend other schools are also welcome here. Choosing the nursery therefore need not mean choosing Manor for primary school. Keep the Reception application separate from decisions about nursery sessions and childcare.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45 to 11:45, with lunch between 11:45 and 12:45 and an afternoon session from 12:45 to 14:45. All-day choices run from 8:45 to either 14:45 or 15:15. Sessions are reserved through the school office in advance; payment for charged bookings is also required in advance through School Gateway. Contact the school for current charges.

Funded places cover 15 or 30 hours weekly for eligible children aged two, three and four. Kids Club adds term-time childcare, with bookings through School Gateway after submitting a registration form. Preschool funding can be used for its sessions where the child receives funding.

Optional clothing colours identify Ladybirds in red, Caterpillars in yellow and Butterflies in blue. Clothes should be named and suitable for messy activities. Bring wellies and waterproofs daily because these cannot be stored at preschool. To enquire or arrange a visit, call 01752 893182.
