Nursery at Beckfoot Phoenix

Communication can begin with a photograph, a symbol or a sign here. Beckfoot Phoenix’s nursery sits within a primary special school in Keighley, where learning is shaped around children with severe learning difficulties or profound and complex learning and medical needs. The school serves ages 2 to 11; that is its whole-school age range. For September 2027, the planned provision includes five nursery places.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 10 and 11 October 2023. This is an early-years judgement within the school’s inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Learning starts from a child’s developmental needs. Across Beckfoot Phoenix, a curriculum with six developmental stages combines Early Years and National Curriculum learning. Activities include practising hand movements, responding to sounds and developing number understanding. For a young child, the emphasis is on skills they can use, with communication and growing independence guiding the work.
Pictures, objects and photographs help children understand and express themselves. Makaton and technology are used where appropriate. In October 2023, children in early years were learning to communicate confidently through different methods. They also explored sounds, enjoyed songs and rhymes, and took part in daily storytelling. Language learning reaches beyond spoken words.
The wider school’s physical layout supports different ways of learning: accommodation is on one level, with broad corridors and classroom suites containing spaces for quieter activity and focused work. Each class has an outdoor area tailored to its pupils. These spaces give children opportunities to move, explore interests and interact with classmates.
Specialist school facilities include the Hydrotherapy Pool, Swing Room and Sensory POD. The latter provides somewhere to pause when sensory input becomes overwhelming. These are school facilities, rather than a fixed timetable of nursery activities.
Preparation begins at home. Before a child starts, a school leader or class teacher visits with the school nurse to learn about their needs. Parents are then invited into school within six weeks of starting or changing class. That gives families an early opportunity to discuss how their child is settling.
Class teams include teachers and teaching assistants, with medical training matched to pupils’ needs. The Care Team works with classroom staff on individual care plans and helps coordinate therapy appointments and toileting support. In October 2023, interactions between staff and children, including those in early years, were exceptionally strong.
Contact continues through termly parent afternoons, annual EHC plan reviews and the class DOJO app, which supports messages, photographs and videos. Families can share what works at home as well as discuss learning in school.
At school lunchtime, children eat together whether they bring food or choose a hot meal cooked on site. Nut products are prohibited, including in packed lunches. This rule matters when preparing food from home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Discuss the next placement stage with the school and local authority; attendance should not be treated as securing the next stage.
Beckfoot Phoenix’s specialist placements involve local-authority assessment through the Education, Health and Care Plan process. The local authority decides placements, considering parental preference, whether a school can meet need, available places and distance from home. The annual review offers a practical opportunity to discuss placement and plan the following year’s learning.
The school day runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday to Friday, during term time. These are school opening hours. Beckfoot Phoenix currently runs neither breakfast nor after-school clubs, so families need to plan around the school day.
