Stories, outdoor play and small adventures around the school give Caterpillars, Ingrow Primary School’s nursery class, its character. Children explore the library and school office during the year, making the wider school familiar through manageable visits. This is an introduction to belonging as well as learning.
Children can join from the term following their third birthday. Based on Broomhill Avenue in Keighley, the nursery sits within a school spread across four Victorian buildings. Its morning routine centres on play, conversation and growing independence, with the Bee Rules giving children simple expectations for how to treat others and explore together.
The morning moves between a welcome, carpet activities, a break for milk and snacks, and opportunities to choose play indoors or outside. Practical maths and a final story with reflection also feature. That gives children both shared activities and time to follow their own interests.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach develops communication, relationships and physical skills through practical experiences. Within the Foundation Stage Unit, adults balance children’s choices with brief teaching sessions and hands-on practice. Staff observe play, ask questions and extend conversations, helping a child’s interest become an opportunity to learn.
Outdoor choosing continues in wet weather as well as dry. Indoors and outside, children have opportunities for imaginative exploration rather than spending the whole session on adult-directed tasks. Visits around the school add another setting for their curiosity.
Read Write Inc. begins here with stories, rhyme and language. Some older nursery children meet Set 1 sounds during the summer term; this is a staged introduction, rather than the same phonics content for every child. Daily reading gives books a regular place in the morning.
At the July 2022 inspection, Ofsted identified early-years strengths in adults’ use of subject vocabulary and experiences such as visits to the cenotaph and local church, which helped children’s confidence. The school’s early-reading improvement needs concerned matching books to known sounds and training adults who listen to reading; these were school findings, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
A teacher, nursery nurse and classroom assistant make up the Caterpillars team. Welcome time gives settling a place within the morning, while routines and boundaries introduce the Bee Rules through everyday interactions. Milk and snacks provide a pause between activities.
Class Dojo carries photographs and messages for families. Friday Stay and Play, from 10:45am to 11:30am, lets parents and carers share classroom activities, offering a practical way to understand the experiences their child talks about at home.
For additional needs, the school uses a cycle of assessment, planning, support and review, involving families in decisions. A language therapist supports the EYFS, and visual aids help children with communication needs. School access features include ramps and accessible toilets. Parents can raise concerns with the teacher or arrange a SEND drop-in through the office or ClassDojo; safety concerns go to the safeguarding team through the office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bradford’s online school admissions route. The admissions page gives 15 January 2026 as its deadline, which is a past application deadline.
Transition support is a separate matter from admission. For children with SEND, the school’s arrangements can include extra visits, meetings, information passed to new staff and individual transition plans. These help prepare for change; they do not secure a place.
Morning timing. The Caterpillars page gives 8:40am to 11:45am, while the general timetable gives an 8:45am start. This five-minute difference matters for drop-off planning. The nursery page gives a collection gate opening of 11:30am and closing of 11:45am.
For a nursery application, telephone the school office on 01535 603868. Families are contacted when a place becomes available. General enquiries can also go to admin@ingrow.org.uk.
