Nursery at Parkwood Primary School

Singing, exploring materials and learning to manage feelings give Parkwood’s nursery its character. Charanga music and Jigsaw personal and social learning sit alongside practical activities, making this an introduction to school that reaches beyond early number work.
Children can join the nursery at age three. It forms part of Parkwood Primary School on Parkwood Street in Keighley, beside Parkwood Woods. The school grounds include an allotment, a cycle track and outdoor learning areas. These facilities form part of the school grounds.
Morning and afternoon sessions divide the day. The morning session finishes at 11.30am; afternoon nursery starts at noon, with the school day ending at 3pm. That gives families distinct collection and start times to build into their routine.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together practical exploration, language, movement and personal development here. Development Matters guides activities involving different materials, with some chosen by children and others led by adults. Children therefore have opportunities both to follow an interest and to tackle an adult’s suggestion.
Music begins with exploring sounds. Singing and rhymes develop language as well as awareness of melody and pitch, supported by Charanga. For early mathematics, Mastering Number and White Rose resources organise learning into small steps, with an emphasis on understanding numbers.
Learning about the world starts close to home: geography introduces words and ideas about children’s surroundings and community, while history activities respond to their interests. Physical development includes work on coordination, balance and agility. Parkwood also uses outdoor spaces frequently with its younger children, giving movement a place alongside classroom learning.
Jigsaw starts in nursery and combines personal and social learning with emotional literacy. Its lessons are adapted for the children being taught. In May 2025, the inspection identified an early-years emphasis on kindness and turn-taking that helped children learn how to behave with others. It also described a planned reading and writing curriculum beginning in nursery.
The nursery team includes associate staff, alongside early-years apprentice teaching assistants. For children with SEND, the school uses individual pupil profiles and plans based on their needs. Families can contact the SEND coordinator at send@parkwood.nsat.org.uk. The school’s specialist Resourced Provision has a separate Bradford SEND allocation process; a mainstream place does not provide access to it.
Meals are prepared by an in-house catering team. Paid school meals are available to nursery pupils who do not qualify for free meals; benefit-related eligibility requires an application through Bradford council. Families with allergy concerns can speak to the school. Contact the school for current meal charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bradford’s coordinated school admissions scheme, using the online application route.
The application period usually runs from mid-October to mid-January. Apply by the deadline for the relevant year and check Bradford’s precise dates, since this is a usual timetable rather than a fixed annual deadline. Choosing nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
To request a nursery application pack and arrange a visit, contact the school directly on 01535 603832 or email office@parkwood.bradford.sch.uk.
The school uniform combines a navy logo sweatshirt or cardigan with a white polo shirt and dark grey trousers, skirt or pinafore. Plain black shoes complete it. Whittakers Uniform Shop on Low Street and Top Trends on Cavendish Street are the named suppliers in Keighley.
For access planning, the school occupies two sites separated by St Paul’s, an unadopted road. Its buildings used day-to-day have wheelchair access, and the outdoor play areas are largely wheelchair accessible, apart from the KS1 Noah’s ark and slide area.
Children can join at age three. Contact the school directly for a nursery application pack and to arrange a visit.
