Library books to take home and adults who keep conversation going give Stanbury’s nursery its clearest character. Children join from age three, within the school’s Foundation Stage unit. Nursery and Reception belong to that unit, making early education part of school life rather than a separate setting.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its October 2023 inspection. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Conversation does real work here. In October 2023, adults talked continuously with early years children as activities unfolded, helping them engage and extend their learning. Mathematical understanding also developed effectively. For parents, the useful distinction is that activities come with adult interaction: children have someone helping them think about what they are doing.
The Foundation Stage approach includes following children’s interests and encouraging unfamiliar experiences. Its account of learning includes imaginative transformations into a zoo and wizard adventures. These give a concrete flavour of the experiences used to encourage exploration and questions.
Books connect nursery with home. Library exchanges happen on Mondays, with another day used for children who do not attend then. Keeping the borrowed book in the child’s bag allows the next exchange to happen. Foundation Stage curriculum outlines are issued each half term, giving parents a way to follow the learning themes.
Early years children settled promptly into school life in October 2023. The Foundation Stage team also invites parents to speak directly with staff about concerns. That gives families a straightforward route for discussing how their child is managing.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school’s approach is to identify difficulties early and establish achievable, measurable steps where more complex needs emerge. Parents considering a place are encouraged to make contact early. The SEND coordinator can discuss individual requirements and the support the school can provide, so that conversation can begin before the child joins.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bradford MDC and meet the council’s application deadline. The school handles nursery admissions itself, so the two applications follow different routes.
Preparation and allocation are separate questions. In October 2023, early years children were well prepared for their next educational stage. That finding concerns their learning and development; it does not secure admission to Reception.
Funding is described as up to 15 hours each week across 38 weeks, subject to eligibility, with some working families qualifying for 30 hours. A Bradford Council funding claim form is required. The school office provides help with the funding application.
Nursery provision includes wraparound care. Tours can be arranged through the office on 01535 642270 or office@stanbury.bradford.sch.uk.
Collection and parking. Children leaving during school hours must be collected by an adult and signed out at the office. Main Street is narrow; parents may also use allocated parking bays at The Wuthering Heights Pub, with considerate parking requested.
A separate community Stay and Play session provides another family activity: Friday mornings during term time, 9:15 to 11:00, in Room in the Roof. Parents or carers attend with under-fives, and families need no existing school connection. Activities include storytelling, crafts and sand or water play, followed by a snack and singing.
The nursery accepts children aged three and over.
