At a Glance

A covered veranda, a nature trail and space for gardening give outdoor play a clear place in nursery life at Strong Close. Children can use the outdoor learning area throughout their sessions, making exploration part of the day rather than a separate outing.

This maintained nursery school on Airedale Road in Keighley takes children aged 2 to 5. Its Early Years Enhanced Specialist Provision includes 30 places for children with complex needs. Nursery education is the school's purpose here, rather than an introductory class within a primary school.

The Nursery Day

Play combines children's own choices with activities planned by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning across seven areas: developing movement, relationships and communication alongside early reading, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning involves talking, exploring, trying ideas and practising skills through play.

Staff meet weekly to shape activities around children's interests, needs and schemas. Indoor learning and the outdoor area both support this approach. The veranda, gardening space and nature trail give children different places to investigate and learn.

Books have a substantial role. In June 2025, children chose books independently, adults read expressively, and older children practised recognising sounds in preparation for later phonics lessons. Children also worked with an artist in residence and a gardener, explored local heritage and spent time connecting with older neighbours. Those experiences extend learning beyond classroom activities. Ofsted's inspection on 24 and 25 June 2025 found that children progressed exceptionally well and were well prepared for their next educational stage.

Care and Support

Settling follows the child. A parent or familiar adult stays for at least the first session, then discusses readiness for independent attendance with the key worker. The key person usually helps the child settle, shares information with parents and provides personal care, including changing nappies and helping with sleep. That gives families a familiar contact for both learning and everyday care.

Qualified teachers work alongside early years practitioners. Electronic photographs and observations let parents follow development from home and contribute their own records, connecting nursery experiences with family life.

Food accommodates children's dietary needs, with milk and water freely available. For children attending over lunchtime, hot meals form part of learning about healthy eating; menus draw on NHS Better Health Healthier Families recipes.

Specialist provision has a designated classroom, a teacher-led staff team and Individual Support Plans. Children learn alongside their peers as well as receiving individual or small-group help. Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists contribute to support. At the June 2025 inspection, identification of SEND was prompt, specialist support enabled inclusion, and safeguarding arrangements were effective.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Strong Close does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for their chosen primary school through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Nursery attendance should not be treated as securing the next place.

Preparation is practical as well as educational. Adults encourage children to manage tasks independently and care for their surroundings. For children with SEND, staff work with parents and other professionals to support the move to the next school; this can include referral for a Statutory Assessment. Transition support and admissions remain separate matters.
