Blossom classroom brings three- and four-year-olds together with Reception children, making shared early years learning the defining feature of Sutton’s nursery. A qualified teacher works alongside staff trained in early years. For families choosing a school nursery, that shared classroom is a concrete part of the experience, rather than simply a school address.
The preschool welcomes children aged 3 to 4 at Sutton CofE Primary and Nursery School in Sutton-in-Craven. Its introduction was planned for September 2024. The wider school identifies love, peace and courage as its Christian values, placing the nursery within a Church of England school community.
Indoor and outdoor learning both form part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision. Children have learning opportunities in each environment, so the nursery experience extends beyond Blossom classroom. The arrangement combines a shared teaching space with provision outside.
Planning balances adult-chosen topics with children’s interests. Celebrations, changes through the seasons and festivals provide starting points, while themes suggested by the children can change the direction of learning. This gives the curriculum a recognisable structure while leaving room for a child’s curiosity to influence what happens next.
Visits and additional learning opportunities are also shaped around those interests. The important distinction for parents is that topics are flexible: children’s interests can influence both the theme and the experiences added to it. Here, EYFS means an early years curriculum with indoor and outdoor provision, planned themes and space for children to help shape their learning.
Care facilities include toilets for independent use and a newly fitted hygiene room. These are practical features for children developing independence, with a separate hygiene facility alongside the learning provision.
Within the wider school team, the headteacher also holds the SENCo and designated safeguarding lead roles. A deputy safeguarding lead provides cover. For a family raising a concern about additional needs or child welfare, those roles establish responsibility within the school’s leadership structure.
Before admission, the school collects emergency contacts and information about children’s dietary and health requirements, together with parental responsibility details. Parents must promptly report changes. Written permission is sought for emergency medical advice or treatment, making these care arrangements part of preparation for starting.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Applications are handled by North Yorkshire Council’s admissions office, with an electronic application route through the council.
Sharing Blossom classroom with Reception children gives preschool children familiarity with that learning environment. It is a classroom arrangement, not an admission entitlement. Keep the Reception application separate from the decision to attend nursery.
The opening announcement for September 2024 included plans to accept government-supported 30 free hours and provide wraparound care. These were part of the announced preschool model.
