Songs and stories start early in Ducklings, Cleobury Mortimer Primary School’s nursery: even two-year-olds were confidently joining in with singing in June 2023. This is nursery provision on the primary school site, with entry possible after a child’s second birthday. It gives younger children their own starting point within the school.
The early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 20 and 21 June 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Nursery rhymes, singing and stories are concrete features of learning here. In June 2023, children began learning rhymes and stories from the start of nursery, including those aged two. For a parent choosing an early introduction to language and books, these are useful details: the youngest children were already taking part.
At the June 2023 inspection, the early years curriculum built learning in a deliberate order, starting with children’s existing abilities. In plain parent language, the emphasis is on adding the next steps to what a child can already manage. In June 2023, this planning helped children understand what they were learning securely. The evidence of the nursery day is strongest around this progression and children’s participation in songs and stories.
Support for additional needs includes provision specifically for preschool children. The school is an Early Years SEND Preferred Provider, supporting children with complex needs who have an education, health and care plan, or are likely to need one. Families and relevant professionals contribute to a cycle of assessing needs, planning support, putting it into practice and reviewing it.
Nuffield Early Language Intervention is among the support programmes for early years children. This gives families a named language intervention to discuss when considering their child’s needs. Concerns can first be raised with the class teacher, with the SENCo involved as needed.
For children receiving SEND support, reviews take place each term and are shared with parents through meetings, reports or parents’ evenings. A home and school communication book can also be used when agreed useful for the child and family. These arrangements give parents a part in reviewing support and sharing information.
The school building is on one level, and nappy changing provision forms part of its facilities. These practical features matter alongside learning support for younger children and those with mobility or personal care needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Shropshire Council’s coordinated admissions scheme; direct Reception applications to the school or trust are not accepted. The normal closing date is 15 January before entry.
For September 2027 entry, nursery attendance carries no Reception priority. Allocation follows the admission criteria, including care status, catchment, siblings and distance. Treat choosing Ducklings and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
For children with SEND moving between classes, the current and new teachers meet with the SENCo or assistant SENCo to discuss needs and future targets. Parents can meet the new teacher and SEND team to raise transition concerns. That information sharing concerns support, not entitlement to a place.
Nursery applications are considered in submission order, subject to session availability, and children can join after their second birthday. The booking implication is straightforward: submitting a form does not itself confirm that the desired sessions can be accommodated.
