Nursery at Franche Primary School

Attentive care for two-year-olds gives Franche’s early years provision its clearest character. In April 2025, adults working with these youngest children responded closely to their needs. That matters for children taking their first steps into group care: adult responsiveness is part of the experience here.
The nursery belongs to Franche Primary School on Chestnut Grove in Kidderminster. An assistant headteacher oversees early years, covering Tots and Nursery alongside Reception. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 April 2025; this is a judgement of the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Communication is a clear strength of the early years experience. In April 2025, staff helped children develop language and communication securely, with additional speech and language help for children who needed it. For a young child, that supports the ability to express needs and join in with others.
Indoor learning space and an outdoor environment both supported movement and social development well. These are useful foundations for nursery life: learning to interact with other children matters alongside physical development. Early years children also practised placing letters on a writing line.
The nursery curriculum uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its evidenced emphasis includes communication, physical development and social skills. Franche describes an approach built around topics that encourage enquiry, with learning sequences starting in early years and continuing through the school.
Learning consistency. In April 2025, some early years learning received insufficient coverage, and expectations needed to rise. Checks on understanding also missed difficulties with new vocabulary among some early years children. Language support is a strength, but families should weigh it alongside these weaknesses in how learning was taught and checked.
Speech and language help gives the care offer a concrete educational focus. Within the wider school, SEND co-ordinators have responsibilities that include Nursery, giving families a route for discussing additional needs. Parents can request a meeting with their child’s class teacher or contact the SEND team at send@francheprimary.worcs.sch.uk.
Family support also extends beyond classroom concerns. The school participates in Operation Encompass, through which confidential information about police-attended domestic abuse incidents enables safeguarding staff to support affected children. Its Early Help approach aims to respond when difficulties first arise, working with families and outside agencies where needed.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their intake. The application route is Worcestershire County Council admissions. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Wraparound care runs from 7.30am to 5.30pm for 50 weeks a year, with breakfast club, after-school care and a holiday club. That gives families provision beyond the school day.
