Conversation gives early learning its character at St Mary's: adults help children develop their language while they learn inside and outdoors. The nursery belongs to the primary school on Stoney Lane in Kidderminster. Early years provision was judged Good at the Ofsted inspection on 11 and 12 March 2025. This is a judgement of the school's early years provision, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Alongside the nursery, Kidderminster Early Years Language Class (KEYLC) provides specialist support for children aged 3-5 with communication, speech and language needs across Wyre Forest. In March 2025, this resource provision had capacity for up to 24 pre-school children. Its specialist purpose matters: KEYLC has its own referral and attendance arrangements.
Indoor and outdoor learning both feature in the early years. In March 2025, trained adults supported children through learning activities and gave careful attention to extending their conversations. The practical emphasis is on interaction: adults help children build language as they take part, rather than leaving conversation to chance.
For children attending KEYLC, play sits alongside focused group work. Concept Cat and Teaching Children to Listen are named activities, giving the specialist sessions a mix of shared learning and time to explore through play.
Individual therapy also shapes the classroom experience. Children regularly work individually with a Speech and Language Therapist, who assesses their language and speech through activities. Assessment information is shared with the class teacher to inform the classroom's daily organisation. That connects specialist work with what children do during the rest of their session.
Early identification of children's needs was a strength of the early years in March 2025. Within the resource base, younger children's needs were recognised promptly, with support directed towards developing speech and language and preparing for Reception. For families using this specialist provision, communication support and the next educational step are closely connected.
KEYLC works with parents and carers as well as children's mainstream settings. These relationships are intended to coordinate support between the adults involved in a child's learning. They matter especially because attendance is usually for two terms, approximately six months, rather than an indefinite placement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at St Mary's. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct decision from choosing nursery provision.
KEYLC aims to support children's speech and language development before they begin mainstream Reception. Its work with mainstream settings, and the transition support identified in March 2025, concern children's preparation. They do not establish an entitlement to a place at this school.
Specialist attendance. A Speech and Language Therapist refers children to KEYLC. Children receive two three-hour sessions each week, with no more than 8 children in a group. Families should distinguish this arrangement from the school's general nursery provision.
Morning KEYLC groups meet either on Tuesday and Thursday or on Monday and Friday, from 8:45am to 11:45am. The afternoon group meets on Tuesday and Thursday, from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Each group therefore follows a specific pair of days.
