At a Glance

Woods, farm visits and growing butterflies give this nursery a character beyond its classroom. St Paul's has a 26-place nursery class within its Church of England primary school in Hunton Bridge. Children can join in the term following their third birthday, with entry points in September, January and April.

Two weekday patterns shape the choice for families: mornings or a day continuing until mid-afternoon. Both run Monday to Friday, so the practical decision is about the length of each day rather than choosing individual attendance days.

The Nursery Day

Outdoor experiences include visits to the big playground and woods, autumn farm visits and a Signs of Autumn walk. These are concrete opportunities to explore beyond the nursery classroom. Growing butterflies and litter picking add examples of children engaging with living things and their surroundings, rather than keeping learning entirely indoors.

Stories and imaginative activities have their place too. Nursery Rhymes, World Book Day and Designing dinosaur underpants sit alongside a Maths theme day. Parent readers and shared reading bring families into book-related activities; a fruit tasting workshop adds another experience involving direct exploration. These examples give parents useful detail about the kinds of activities children encounter, without suggesting a fixed daily timetable.

In July 2023, Ofsted found that questioning from early years encouraged children to consider their learning deeply. For parents, that points to adults prompting thought and conversation alongside the activities themselves.

Care and Support

Early years leadership sits with the deputy headteacher. For children who need additional support, the school's approach involves parents in assessing needs, planning provision and reviewing it. Class teachers can work with the special educational needs coordinator and senior leadership team on an Assess, Plan, Do, Review support plan. This gives families a continuing process for discussing what their child needs.

Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Educational Psychologists are among the professionals staff work with across the school. Provision is reviewed with parents, giving them a part in decisions about support.

Lunch has a specific arrangement for morning attenders: the optional paid lunch club requires a packed lunch from home. It extends their stay to 1pm, making food preparation part of the family's planning.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hertfordshire County Council, following the normal Reception application process and deadline.

For the admissions round with applications opening on 3 November 2025, the deadline was 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Keep the Reception application separate from the nursery booking when planning your child's next step.

Practical Information

Morning provision runs from 9am to noon, totalling 15 hours each week; the 30-hour option runs from 9am to 3pm. Families using the 30-hour eligibility route must give their code to the school office. Additional provision can be purchased by families who are ineligible for that route.

A paid extension from 3pm to 3.30pm aligns the nursery finish with the rest of the school. Charged sessions are invoiced each term in advance, with advance payment required. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery applications go directly to the school office at admin@stpauls779.herts.sch.uk. Tours can also be booked through the office on 01923 263641, giving families a practical way to explore the setting before applying.
