Canopied outdoor space gives Fairstead’s nursery a practical distinguishing feature: children can move between inside and outside learning throughout the year. This is a nursery class within Fairstead Community Primary and Nursery School in King’s Lynn, where children can begin from age three. It combines its own classroom provision with the setting of a larger primary school.
In February 2025, Ofsted judged the early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it should not be read as a separate nursery inspection. For families, the outdoor arrangement is a more concrete starting point for understanding the day than the grade alone.
Indoor and outdoor learning are connected through free flow access to secure outside areas. The canopies make outdoor learning possible across the seasons, rather than confining it to fine weather. This gives children scope to learn outside as part of their day, alongside time in the classroom.
Beyond those early years areas, the school grounds include a wildlife garden, an outdoor classroom, substantial play equipment and a space for performances. These are features of the wider school environment, rather than a description of a nursery session timetable.
In February 2025, the curriculum began in early years and built new learning on what children already knew. There was also a school-wide curriculum concern: some subjects needed clearer identification and repetition of important knowledge and vocabulary. The practical distinction is between having an ambitious curriculum and ensuring that its essential ideas stick.
Class teachers oversee children’s welfare as well as their learning. Teaching teams plan together, with teaching assistants contributing through close communication and support. Care and curriculum therefore sit within the same classroom team structure, rather than being described as separate responsibilities.
Behaviour expectations also begin in early years. In February 2025, staff applied the school’s behaviour approach consistently from this starting point, giving children clear expectations as they began school life.
Fairstead aims to support children’s emotional and social development alongside their physical and intellectual development. Its emphasis on relationships and working with families gives that aim a practical focus: helping adults support the individual child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, meeting the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions, even though both concern the same school.
The school office handles enquiries and can arrange an appointment for families who would like to visit. Contact it on 01553 774666 or at office@fairstead.norfolk.sch.uk.
