Tiger the class mascot, a number wizard and a Singing Sack give Greenpark Academy’s nursery its own character. Familiar routines bring children together, while play gives them room to explore independently and make friends. This is the school’s nursery class in King’s Lynn, welcoming children from their third birthday until age four.
Early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 26 and 27 September 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The early years findings highlighted knowledgeable staff and activities that kept children interested in learning.
Play and language shape the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven connected areas of learning and development; here, children combine activities they choose themselves with time directed by adults. Indoor and outdoor spaces provide continuous provision: activities remain accessible for children to explore, with additions reflecting their interests and current themes. Opportunities to practise coordination and hand movements prepare children for writing.
Morning and afternoon circles create a shared rhythm. Children greet each other, talk about their feelings and practise early number and sound skills. Counting and number recognition involve helping the number wizard; Phase One phonics games develop listening and the ability to distinguish and make sounds. Maths also appears through rhymes, songs and interactive games, giving children several ways to practise.
Books are shared daily, sometimes together and sometimes with a small group or individual child during free-choice play. The Singing Sack comes out twice each day for songs and nursery rhymes. Daily Flipper Flappers activities involve dancing and movement to strengthen shoulders and arms for writing. In September 2023, story choices connected with learning themes helped sustain children’s attention across early years activities.
Before children start, staff gather information from families and previous settings to understand each child. Settling centres on building trust with adults and becoming familiar with routines. Tiger helps explain expectations, while staff model cooperative play and support children in naming emotions. This gives children practical language for expressing feelings and understanding friends.
The Thrive Approach supports emotional development from the start of nursery. Staff use the Leuven Scales to monitor children’s involvement and wellbeing, alongside termly Thrive assessments. The Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) supports spoken language across EYFS, and additional interventions sit alongside children learning together. Parents can discuss concerns with the class teacher or SENDCo.
Regular parent cafes let families join nursery activities and learn ways to continue them at home. Class Dojo is the school’s main communication channel, with photographs, updates and direct teacher contact. School catering is provided by Aspens; special dietary menus require families to complete a dietary requirements form before they can be prepared.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Children do not move automatically into the main school: families must make a separate application through Norfolk Local Authority in the normal admissions round, by the normal deadline. The local authority sends the offer directly to families. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
Nursery operates during term time, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 3.00pm. The Nursery Enquiry Form takes your child’s date of birth and the days and times you want. Prospective parents and children can arrange a nursery visit through the school office.
The Universal Offer provides 570 funded hours annually across three claim periods, equivalent to 15 hours weekly here. Funding begins in the claim period after a child’s third birthday. Eligible working parents may receive up to 1,140 hours annually, equivalent to 30 hours weekly. That entitlement requires a Childcare Choices code, an application before the relevant term starts and eligibility reconfirmation every three months.
