Songs, poems and books shaped Heacham’s early learning in December 2022, alongside becoming familiar with routines and building relationships. Sparrows Class is the named nursery provision within Heacham Infant and Nursery School. It places the nursery within an infant school, rather than a separate childcare setting.
In December 2022, nursery provision included two-year-olds. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following its visit on 6 and 7 December 2022; this was an early years judgement within the school inspection. Children in early years adapted readily to routines and built positive connections with adults and one another. For families, those findings describe a start centred on both learning and relationships.
Language runs through the learning. In December 2022, children’s early reading experiences included books, poems, rhymes and singing. Adults demonstrated reading and helped younger children build their vocabulary. The emphasis gives children ways to enjoy words and stories before reading independently becomes the goal.
Learning extended outdoors as well as indoors. Activities developed literacy alongside behaviour, so learning to participate with others formed part of the educational day. The early years foundation stage here brought together those beginnings in language, relationships and classroom routines. These are connected experiences: becoming comfortable with adults and other children helps a child take part in learning.
Curriculum planning. In December 2022, a small number of subjects needed clearer sequencing from the nursery onwards. Staff needed greater clarity about the knowledge children should acquire before their next stage. That qualification matters alongside the positive early years findings: families should consider the progression of learning as well as the activities themselves.
Relationships and communication were strengths of the early years experience in December 2022. Children became familiar with routines quickly, while parents received progress updates and guidance on supporting learning at home. Staff also helped parents support reading. This linked the child’s learning across home and nursery, giving families a practical part in those first encounters with books.
Additional support. The same inspection identified a school-wide weakness in checking the learning of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Support was provided, but leaders needed more thorough checks against individual targets agreed with parents so that adjustments happened promptly. For a family considering nursery support, the relevant issue is how progress towards those targets is reviewed.
