At a Glance

Stories, hands-on exploration and growing independence shape life in Robins, the nursery class at King's Oak Academy in Gaywood, King's Lynn. It serves three- and four-year-olds and forms part of the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), alongside Reception. Children begin their school experience within an existing early years setting.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 22 and 23 October 2024. That judgement covers early years as a whole, rather than being a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Adult-guided activities and children's own choices both have a place. Whole-class teaching sits alongside smaller groups and independently chosen play. Termly themes give learning a starting point, while children's interests help shape what follows. Physical exploration and practical investigation let children try ideas for themselves.

The EYFS connects early learning with everyday development. Speaking and listening, managing feelings and building physical skills provide the foundations; number work, literacy, discovering the world and creative expression build on them. Practising pencil control, throwing and catching, and managing personal hygiene all belong within that picture. The aim is broader than preparing children to read or write: it includes learning to communicate and manage themselves.

For nursery literacy, the 2024/25 learning plan includes spotting rhymes, clapping the beats in words and recognising matching initial sounds. Children explore how books work and make early attempts at writing, including pretend shopping lists and their names. These are manageable steps towards understanding print.

Outdoor space has a practical role too. The same plan places nursery physical development in the outside area rather than formal PE lessons. Movement and coordination develop through activity, with room to practise physical skills as part of play.

In October 2024, early years children shared resources, took turns and developed greater independence. Stories, poetry and rhymes supported their first steps towards reading. Language development needs attention. Some adults did not give children enough help to practise unfamiliar vocabulary, limiting opportunities to develop their language. Ofsted asked for further staff training to address this.

Care and Support

Robins has a team of key adults. In October 2024, nursery children settled readily, with positive adult relationships helping them learn routines and expectations. Familiar adults therefore matter to the adjustment to school life.

TAPESTRY shares children's learning with parents, giving families examples to discuss together. Parents need to activate their TAPESTRY account to use it. ClassDojo is also used for communication with parents and carers. For a concern about a child, the first conversation is with their teacher; a Parent Support Advisor can join that discussion.

SEND support involves staff working with families and, when needed, outside professionals to assess needs and plan support. Across the school, Widgit symbols help with visual schedules and communication. These give children another way to understand what happens during the day.

The school kitchen offers hot lunches and sandwiches, with families choosing meals through Parent Pay. Staff monitor eating and communicate about possible changes to meal choice. Water is provided during the day, and nursery-aged children can have free milk.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admissions priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through Norfolk County Council. Allocation takes account of the designated area, sibling circumstances and proximity to the school. Familiarity with the setting and securing a school place are separate matters.

Practical Information

Nursery applications go directly to the school office. The school offers up to 30 hours of free nursery education from the term following a child's third birthday. Contact the office for current charges.

The Main Gate opens at 8:35am, when parents can accompany nursery children into their setting. Keep children beside you in the playground: play equipment is unsupervised at that point. The gates close at 8:45am.
