Number rhymes, daily stories and outdoor discovery give Keyingham’s nursery its character. Nursery is known as FS1 and occupies the school’s dedicated early years area alongside Reception, or FS2, with indoor and outdoor spaces for learning through play.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 16 and 17 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play chosen by children forms the main approach within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Adults observe and teach through that play, while short taught sessions introduce specific learning. This gives children opportunities to follow their interests as well as join activities with a clear teaching focus.
Read Write Inc. provides the phonics programme, with daily sessions beginning in FS1. There is also a daily maths session. Stories and shared snack times bring children together to practise talking and social skills, so communication has a place beyond formal lessons.
The shared EYFS timetable combines registration, phonics, maths and structured storytelling with periods of play indoors and outside. After lunch, indoor play is followed by wider curriculum teaching and further play opportunities. A final story and an activity revisiting learning round off the day. These are the rhythms of the shared early years provision, rather than a nursery session booking model.
Forest School takes place at least weekly for every child in the school, and most lessons use the outdoor classroom. For early years children, the focus is understanding nature and learning the words to describe it. Seeds, caring for plants and identifying creatures on the school site provide concrete starting points. Outdoor exploration therefore connects practical experience with language learning.
In July 2024, adults helped nursery children explore numbers through singing and rhymes. Across early years, stories extended vocabulary, while adults demonstrated how to share and wait for a turn. Children were becoming more independent. These everyday interactions matter as much as the taught activities.
Tapestry connects families with children’s early years learning through photographs and videos. Parents can see their child’s progress and contribute comments and their own media, making communication a two-way exchange rather than simply receiving updates.
Support for additional needs is coordinated by a SENDCO and an assistant SENDCO. The school encourages communication between families, teachers and support staff. For a long-term condition requiring prescribed medication, an Individual Health Care Plan is completed through discussion with staff, giving care arrangements a recorded structure.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application to the local authority where they live, meeting its application deadline.
For East Riding residents, the route is East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Families living elsewhere apply through their home local authority. Late applications are considered after those received on time, so nursery attendance should never replace the application itself. Sharing an early years area with Reception is a feature of the provision, not an admissions entitlement.

Keyingham Open Evening takes place on 15 October 2026, from 4pm to 6pm. This is a school event, giving interested families a dated opportunity to engage with Keyingham before making their choice.
No. Families need to apply separately for Reception through the local authority where they live, by its application deadline.
Child-led play is the main approach, alongside taught activities. Daily phonics begins in FS1 through Read Write Inc., and the EYFS provision includes daily maths and stories.
Yes. The early years area includes outdoor play provision. Every child in the school takes part in Forest School at least weekly, with most lessons using the outdoor classroom.
Tapestry shares photographs and videos of early years learning. Parents can view progress and add comments and media themselves.
