Conversation, storytelling and learning through play give Oakley's early years provision its character. Nursery sits within Oakley School in South Leamington, near Bishops Tachbrook, with an approach that combines children's own exploration and activities led by adults. The balance gives children room to follow an interest while also learning skills through direct teaching.
In the inspection published on 2 June 2026, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to be at Strong standard. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating. Secure relationships and routines were strengths: children gained independence and learned to express what they needed.
Across the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), learning follows children's interests alongside planned teaching. Skills return over time, giving children repeated opportunities to practise and remember them. Guided activities sit alongside independent learning, with adults adjusting the next steps to children's needs. For parents, the emphasis is on how a child learns as well as what they learn.
Spoken language threads through play, stories and everyday routines. Adults model vocabulary and sentences, while books provide starting points for conversation. The EYFS discussion guidelines encourage children to speak audibly, listen to another speaker, ask why and explain their thinking using because. These are practical building blocks for joining a conversation and making an idea understood.
Named programmes across EYFS include Little Wandle for phonics, Drawing Club and Little Wandle Handwriting for writing, and White Rose Maths alongside the Mastering Number Programme for early mathematics. Outdoor learning adds opportunities for movement, exploration and working together. The mix connects language, physical development and shared activity rather than treating them as isolated tasks.
Families' knowledge of their child helps shape support from the start. The inspection published on 2 June 2026 found that leaders drew on families and pre-school settings to recognise children's needs early. Personalised settling routines put staff's understanding of each child into practice, while dependable, warm relationships helped children feel secure and ready for learning.
Children needing extra help, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, received planned support to participate in learning. Staff checked understanding and used what they learned to address gaps. Turn-taking, expressing needs and forming relationships were part of children's progress, alongside early reading and communication.
For families raising a concern about additional needs, the school's SEND team can be contacted at Oakley-Send@stowevalley.com. This gives parents a direct route to discuss their child with the support team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by its deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child's move into school, rather than assuming nursery enrolment completes it.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01926 290646 or email oakleyschool@stowevalley.com. Use this general enquiry route to begin contact with Oakley. Questions about additional needs can also go directly to the SEND team, allowing those discussions to start alongside your nursery enquiry.
