Nursery at Woodcroft Academy

Morning sessions, afternoons and a full nursery day give Woodcroft Academy’s youngest children three distinct attendance patterns. The nursery belongs to the academy on Wallbridge Drive in Leek, placing early education within a school setting. For families, the practical distinction is clear: a shorter session and a full day have different collection times.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) day combines taught activities with time for play and exploration. In the Spring 1 timetable, phonics, literacy and maths sit alongside continuous provision, outdoor play and stories. This gives children a day that changes pace, rather than one long sequence of adult instruction.
Dough Disco appears among the warm-up activities, while Forestry Friday brings a named outdoor element to the afternoon programme. Nursery rhyme time and nursery maths fluency also have their own slots. These details give parents a more concrete picture of the balance between language, number work and activity.
At the 20 to 21 February 2024 inspection, children were making a positive start in early years, with phonics introducing letter sounds in a planned sequence. Early-years celebrations also included religious festivals, giving children opportunities to encounter different traditions through activities they can take part in.
An Early Years Assistant and an EYFS Teaching and Learning Practitioner form part of the staffing structure, alongside the EYFS lead. Their roles establish the team supporting early learning; they should not be read as a promise about how many adults work with a particular nursery group.
For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities, parents begin with their child’s class teacher. Meetings can be arranged directly or through the office. The school’s support process uses Pupil Passports with measurable targets, parental discussion at the beginning of each new term, and an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle. That gives families specific goals to discuss as support is adjusted.
Personal care arrangements require signed records, parental involvement in care plans and attention to children’s privacy. Familiar adults should provide this care. In February 2024, inspectors also identified a school-wide need for better training and guidance for some support staff; this was not presented as a nursery-specific finding.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Staffordshire County Council Admissions, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year.
For 2027/28 entry, nursery attendance carries no oversubscription priority. The allocation criteria cover care status, qualifying exceptional circumstances, an older sibling who will still attend the academy at the proposed admission date, catchment residence and distance. Familiarity with the school therefore remains separate from entitlement to a place. Parents choosing the nursery should keep the later Reception application as a distinct task.
The full nursery day runs from 8.45am to 3.15pm. Morning sessions finish at 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Those separate endpoints matter when planning work and collection.
An adult must accompany children onto the playground. The playground gate opens at 8.35am and closes at 8.50am; nursery registration closes at 8.55am, after which children use the main entrance. Afternoon gates open at 2.55pm, closing at 3.30pm, with late collections handled through the office. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01538 714796.
The full day is 8.45am to 3.15pm, the morning is 8.45am to 11.45am, and the afternoon is 12.15pm to 3.15pm.
