Long stretches of play and books within children's reach give Belgrave St Peter's nursery its character. This is the nursery at Belgrave St Peter's CofE Primary School on Thurcaston Road in Leicester, with 15 places and a morning session pattern. Children can join in September following their third birthday.
The school describes its Christian values of hope, love and faith as embracing families across different beliefs. Nursery children join Monday whole-school worship and Friday celebration worship, bringing them into the school's shared routines from the early years.
Play has time to develop here. Children spend extended periods exploring their ideas, with staff using a topic and related stories as a starting point rather than keeping every activity on a fixed course. Adults follow children's interests while planning teaching around each child's next steps. That gives children room to choose, alongside teaching directed at the skills they are developing.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning about relationships, language and movement with early literacy, maths, the world and creative materials. Adult teaching sits alongside activities children choose themselves. The Rise EYFS Curriculum starts with children's family experiences and immediate surroundings, aiming to build understanding through connected learning and repeated encounters with ideas.
Classroom resources remain accessible for children to select and use independently. Sand, water, playdough and construction areas provide opportunities to practise physical skills; outdoor space has free-flow access alongside planned PE. Funky Fingers and Big Moves are named sessions within the early years provision. The indoor layout also reduces tables and chairs to allow more movement.
Early reading starts with listening, talking and noticing similarities. Nursery children match, sort, categorise and describe, with Letters and Sounds Phase 1 guiding this work. Weekly Word Aware sessions introduce vocabulary and concepts. Books are shared daily and placed throughout the classroom, so stories can become part of children's chosen play rather than remaining confined to a reading activity.
Starting nursery is treated as a partnership with families. The nursery aims to reduce anxiety by working with parents across home and nursery life. Weekly Stay and Read sessions give parents a practical role: they share books in class and can borrow them for family reading at home.
Physical independence extends to snack time. Within the early years provision, children can use a snack table to prepare fruit and pour their own milk, making everyday care another opportunity to practise handling and coordination.
For additional needs, the school works with Leicester City Local Authority and has a SENCo responsible for SEND provision. Parents can raise concerns through a SEND form, with a response aimed for within 5-7 school days. Arbor brings school communications together in one system, while safeguarding concerns can be sent directly to the designated safeguarding leads.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and main-school admission are separate: families must apply again for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. First-time school applications go through Leicester City Council's admissions service. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate commitments.
Morning sessions last three hours, adding up to 15 hours a week. This is a practical fit for families seeking a morning nursery routine.
Nursery application forms are collected from the school office. Tours can also be arranged through the office, giving families a chance to see the provision before applying. Contact the school on 0116 2665790 or email admin@belgrave.risemat.co.uk. The address is Thurcaston Road, Leicester, LE4 5PG.
