Nursery at Coleman Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Language comes first in Coleman’s nursery. In November 2024, staff’s emphasis on communication helped children prepare for Reception, giving this provision a clear focus for families weighing up their child’s first school experience. Learning to express themselves matters here.
Children can join the nursery from age 3, with full-time attendance offered. It forms part of Coleman Primary School on Gwendolen Road in Leicester. The early years provision received a Requires improvement judgement at the inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024; that judgement covers the school’s early years rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Communication is the clearest nursery-specific strength. In November 2024, children benefited from adults making language development a priority. For parents, the useful implication is preparation for the next stage through developing communication, rather than simply becoming familiar with a school setting.
Across the early years, children were developing an understanding of number and learning routines that supported readiness for more formal education. These are practical foundations: mathematical understanding alongside learning how to take part in a structured day.
Curriculum consistency. The early years curriculum had ambitious intentions, but its delivery in Reception was uneven in November 2024. Activities there did not consistently provide purposeful learning. This concern belongs specifically to Reception and should be considered alongside the positive nursery finding about language, rather than treated as a finding about nursery activities.
Children in the early years were receiving good care in November 2024. Alongside that care, the development of routines gave them preparation for later learning. Care and education were both part of the early years experience.
For additional needs, the school’s SENCO can be reached through the main office on 0116 2490109. Leicester’s Local Offer brings together information about local education, health and social care services, giving families another route to understand support beyond school.
Coleman also works with Leicester City’s Early Help Offer to support families when difficulties emerge. Many staff speak community languages and can help families who need that support. At school level, workshops explain teaching and regular information goes home about children’s learning, helping parents connect learning at school with support at home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task when planning your child’s next year.
Preparation and admission are different questions. The nursery’s communication focus was helping children get ready for Reception in November 2024, but readiness does not secure admission. Choose the nursery for the experience it provides now while keeping the Reception application separate.
The school office is the enquiry route and can arrange an appointment to look around. Contact Coleman on 0116 2490109. A visit provides an opportunity to consider the setting before choosing it.
Full-time nursery attendance is offered from age 3. For families considering this pattern, the key practical distinction is between choosing nursery provision and applying separately for the later Reception place.
Children can join from age 3, and full-time attendance is offered.
