Nursery at Evington Valley Primary School

Three-hour mornings give Evington Valley’s nursery a clear shape: a short school session, with play, conversation and regular reading. The provision is Foundation Stage 1 (FS1), for three- and four-year-olds, within Evington Valley Primary School on Evington Valley Road in Leicester. It suits families looking for a morning nursery routine.
An EYFS team leader oversees the Foundation Stage team, which includes teachers and the SEND co-ordinator. That places early learning and inclusion within the same team structure, giving families routes to discuss both their child’s learning and additional needs.
The morning runs from 8.30am to 11.30am. Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), learning combines activities guided by adults with play children choose themselves. In January 2023, Ofsted found that early-years children treated one another respectfully, followed established routines and developed their communication through adults modelling language. For a young child, that means learning includes how to talk, take part and play alongside others, as well as the activity itself.
Books have a regular place in nursery life: teachers read to nursery children regularly. Listening to stories sits alongside the early-years emphasis on language, giving children another way to encounter words and ideas. Families can also use Phase 1 activities such as Voice Sounds and I-Spy Sounds to explore sounds at home. These provide a concrete connection between classroom language work and something parents can try with their child.
Parents can raise learning or developmental concerns with the class teacher or speak directly to the SEND co-ordinator, who holds the National SENCO Award. The school takes parents’ information into account when planning support. Children on the SEND register have three reviews each year, giving families recurring opportunities to discuss progress and the help their child receives.
Specialist services the school can access include Speech and Language Therapy and the Early Years Special Needs Teaching Service. The school building is single-storey, with no stairs, and has changing facilities, accessible toilets and a medical room. These are useful practical features for children who need help with mobility or personal care.
Daily milk is free for children under five, and Foundation Stage children receive fresh fruit each day. Important reminders and alerts reach parents through Teachers 2 Parents by text and email, so keeping contact details current matters.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Evington Valley. Families must make a separate Reception application through Leicester City Council Children & Young People’s Services, the admissions authority for Foundation Stage 2 (FS2). The local authority decides whether a place can be offered. Treat the nursery choice and Reception application as separate decisions, and follow the council’s application timetable.
The nursery provides 15 hours each week. The funded entitlement for three- and four-year-olds covers 38 weeks a year, until compulsory school age, defined here as the term after their fifth birthday. For the September 2026 intake, places were offered as morning sessions of three hours per day.
To register interest, ring the school office on 0116 273 6971, preferably on Monday or Tuesday, and ask for the Attendance & Welfare Officer. Registration can begin after a child’s second birthday. Families provide contact details and information about additional learning or medical needs, allowing those needs to enter the conversation from the start.
