Nursery at Granby Primary School

A three-hour session or a longer day with lunch and somewhere to nap: Granby's nursery gives families two distinct ways to shape their child's time at school. There are 39 places in the morning and 39 in the afternoon, with limited extended care linking a session to the remaining school day. The provision sits within Granby Primary School on Granby Road, Leicester.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, this brings speaking and listening, physical skills and relationships together with early reading, writing and number work. Understanding the world and creative expression also have their place. The emphasis reaches beyond preparing children to recognise words or count: managing themselves and building relationships are learning goals too.
Forest School appears within learning about the natural world, while creative work includes making things with materials and performing. These give children different ways to explore and express ideas. Outdoor play is supported by practical clothing requirements: nursery children keep wellington boots at school throughout the year, and coats should suit play in wet weather as well as dry.
In May 2023, early years teachers demonstrated constructive approaches to learning and helped children practise kindness and taking turns. Those small social habits matter in a shared session, where learning involves other children as well as adults.
For children staying through lunchtime under the extended arrangement, a packed lunch is required. A sleep room provides a place for a nap, so the longer day can include rest as well as care across both halves of the school day.
Families receive half-termly EYFS curriculum newsletters explaining the learning ahead. Questions can be discussed with the child's teacher at either end of the day, giving parents a direct route to understand what their child is working on.
The school's special educational needs co-ordinator can be contacted at senco@granby.leicester.sch.uk. Parents with concerns about SEND support should begin with their child's class teacher, then approach the co-ordinator if the issue remains unresolved. This gives families a clear sequence for raising concerns.
Attending Granby's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. A separate application must go through Leicester City Council, which allocates places. Nursery attendance is not among the Reception allocation criteria; families should therefore treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
The criteria include care circumstances, child protection needs, catchment residence and siblings, with distance used to break ties. Familiarity with the school does not replace that application process.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Families request their preferred session when applying. If demand for one session exceeds its places, proximity to school determines priority for that session.
Extended provision covers lunchtime and the other half of the day, making an 8.45am to 3.30pm arrangement possible. Limited extended places. This additional care is charged and availability is limited, so families needing the longer day should enquire through the school office about a place and current charges. Breakfast Club and Camelot Care also accept nursery children for care before and after school, subject to available places.
The funded offer includes 15 weekly hours for three- and four-year-olds, with 30 hours dependent on eligibility, registration and an eligible DERN code. Branded uniform is optional; nursery children may wear black or grey joggers and should have Velcro shoes. There is no on-site parking, which matters when planning collection.
