Free movement between classroom and outdoor play gives Cuthbert's Cubs its defining shape. Children can choose between the two throughout their day, while the school's nature area, playing field, hall and ball court add space for exploration and movement.
Cuthbert's Cubs is the pre-school provision at Great Glen St Cuthbert's Church of England Primary School. It opened in September 2023 and caters for children aged two, three and four. The school aims to help children become independent, confident learners while recognising each child's individual identity. Its own classroom base gives the younger children a place within the wider school.
Play has room to develop here. Access to both indoor and outdoor areas throughout the day lets children move between activities rather than having outdoor time confined to a single break. The nature area provides a different setting for exploration; the field, ball court and hall extend the spaces available for physical activity.
The school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach combines activities led by adults with play that children initiate themselves. In parent terms, learning covers communication, movement and relationships alongside early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. The school combines adult-led teaching with child-initiated play to develop these skills.
Songs, stories and nursery rhymes are part of the school's early years approach to language. Adults help children discuss ideas, ask questions, cooperate and manage feelings during play. Planning can change in response to children's interests, giving staff scope to connect learning with what catches a child's attention.
Within the school's EYFS approach, mathematical thinking develops through teaching and exploration. Topics use selected books to support speech and communication, linking what children hear with what they explore. Parents receive half-termly knowledge organisers explaining the learning and ways to support it at home. This gives families a practical starting point for continuing conversations and activities beyond the classroom.
Each child has an allocated key person. This adult's role combines extending learning with helping the child feel secure and cared for, giving families a clear relationship around their child's development. The pre-school aims to keep parents involved and informed, so that home and nursery work together.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school considers individual needs when deciding on support. Services it can access include Early Years Special Needs support and Speech and Language Therapy. Parents can discuss concerns with the special educational needs coordinator through the school office.
Attending Cuthbert's Cubs does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Leicestershire County Council's online admissions route and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
For children with SEND, transition support includes a meeting for parents and carers and visits to the school. Additional sessions towards the end of the summer term, time with new staff and social stories sent home help children become familiar with the change. These arrangements are separate from the Reception application.
Term-time provision runs Monday to Friday. A full day lasts from 8:50am to 3:20pm; morning sessions finish at 11:50am, while afternoon sessions run from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Wraparound care. Pre-school children cannot use Cuthbert's Club or additional pre-school care. Families need collection arrangements that fit their chosen session.
