Learning to recognise a name and ask for help gives Hope Hamilton’s nursery a practical starting point: growing independence. Foundation Stage 1, or F1, is for children aged 3–4 within Hope Hamilton CofE Primary School on Sandhills Avenue in North Hamilton, Leicester.
This is a Church of England school. Its Christian vision places value on each child as an individual, while the school aims to respect families’ different beliefs and cultures. For parents, that means choosing nursery provision within an explicitly Christian school community.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, shortened to EYFS, is the nursery’s learning stage. Here, preparation extends beyond classroom learning to the small tasks children practise themselves. Recognising their name, asking for help and clearing away toys are among the starting skills encouraged. These give families concrete ways to support growing confidence at home.
In November 2022, Ofsted found an ambitious early-years curriculum, with appealing classrooms and outdoor learning spaces equipped with plentiful resources. Nursery learning introduced foundations for subjects children would encounter later. Indoor and outdoor provision both had a place in that early learning environment.
Every classroom has a peace table where children can discuss disagreements. This makes resolving a problem a practical classroom activity, alongside learning to express what hurts or when help is needed. The school aims for adults to demonstrate respectful relationships through their own interactions.
Starting arrangements have included an F1 stay-and-play session, giving children a chance to meet staff and classmates and become familiar with their classroom. Families were also invited to a playdate at Brompton Park to help children and parents make connections. These are useful first contacts before the ordinary nursery routine begins.
Google Classroom carries school messages, photographs and information about learning apps. For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities, parents can contact staff by email or telephone, arrange a meeting, or speak with the class teacher. That gives families several ways to begin a conversation about support.
Miquill prepares school lunches daily, with menus changing across a three-week rotation. Dietary needs can be accommodated, including medical diets and gluten-free choices. Halal-prepared food is not provided; families needing that option are directed towards vegetarian or pescatarian dishes. Packed lunches must exclude nuts, and Foundation Stage children receive fruit at breaktime.
Children with long-term medical conditions can have an agreed individual healthcare plan. Staff hold first-aid qualifications, and parents receive email notifications when first aid is given. These arrangements connect everyday care with communication at home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Leicester School Admissions is the route signposted for school applications.
For entry in September 2026, the Foundation 2 application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Treat the nursery decision and the later school-place application as separate decisions, rather than assuming attendance reserves a place.
Uniform includes a navy top bearing the school logo or badge, a white collared polo shirt and grey or black bottoms. A school book bag is required instead of a rucksack. Label clothing so children and staff can identify it.
