Nursery at Imperial Avenue Infant School

Five three-hour sessions shape the nursery week at Imperial Avenue Infant School. This is Foundation Stage 1 (F1), a part-time start within the infant school for children who are three before 1 September at the beginning of the academic year.
The annual planned admission number is 56 part-time places. There are spaces for 28 children, with a combination of part-time attendance and 30-hour entitlement possible. Those figures describe different aspects of the provision: the annual intake and the spaces accommodating its attendance patterns.
Morning and afternoon sessions can be combined across the week. That gives families a choice of pattern, although a requested session is not guaranteed. The practical decision is therefore about which sessions can actually be offered, rather than simply choosing a preferred timetable.
Learning starts with foundations. In June 2023, Ofsted identified that the nursery begins the knowledge and skills developed through the school, and that children learn to tell sounds apart. This gives a concrete picture of early learning: listening and recognising differences between sounds, rather than a claim about nursery reading results.
The school plans learning around children's starting points and interests, taking account of additional needs, English as an additional language and limited vocabulary. Its aim is to connect new knowledge with what children already understand. Across the school grounds, a field, quads and outdoor play spaces provide physical settings for learning beyond classrooms.
The June 2023 inspection also identified school-wide weaknesses in some subjects: too little practice of important knowledge and insufficient checking of what children remembered. These were curriculum concerns across the school, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Settling is part of the school's stated approach: the team aims to help children become happy and settled while supporting their learning. Families are encouraged to take part in their child's education from the beginning and continue learning at home. The school aims to build on children's first experiences with their families.
For children with communication and interaction needs, the on-site Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) has a separate placement route. Decisions sit with the Special Education Service, and attending Imperial Avenue gives no priority for a DSP place. Its base includes a multi-sensory room and areas for teaching, kitchen activities, changing and toileting. These facilities belong to the DSP base.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place here. Parents must make a separate application to Leicester City Council, which allocates Reception places. Complete that application within the council's admissions timetable; nursery attendance does not replace it.
Contact the school to register nursery interest once your child turns two, supplying a copy of their birth certificate. Nursery applications have no fixed deadline. Visits can be arranged by appointment, giving families an opportunity to meet the team before choosing.
