Nursery at Linden Primary School

Play with an adult alongside gives Linden’s early years its clearest character: conversation, shared equipment and learning that builds gradually. In November 2024, children sustained their concentration, listened attentively and practised sharing. These are useful foundations for taking part in a classroom as well as learning independently.
There is one nursery class within Linden Primary School, on Headland Road in Evington, Leicester. It combines part-time and full-time places. Children joining the class have their fourth birthday during the year, so the provision serves the stage before starting school. Linden aims for children to feel included, valued, happy and safe, giving families a clear sense of the wider school’s priorities.
Adult involvement in play is the defining teaching detail. In November 2024, staff extended children’s understanding and language while playing beside them. For a parent, the significance is practical: play provides opportunities to develop ideas through conversation with an adult, rather than simply occupying a session.
Learning follows a planned sequence. The early years curriculum helped children build on what they had already learned, and staff understood the learning they were working towards. Across Linden, curriculum planning includes vocabulary, subject knowledge and the methods children use to explore that knowledge, beginning in nursery. That gives early learning a place within the school’s longer curriculum.
Sharing resources and paying attention to others also formed part of children’s experience. The November 2024 early years findings describe children who could concentrate for sustained periods, alongside listening and cooperation. The emphasis reaches beyond learning facts to the habits needed for group learning.
For families with concerns about additional needs, the school SENDCo can be contacted through the office. This gives parents a route for discussing their child’s needs. If medication needs to be administered at school, parents should contact the office too, making that conversation part of preparing for attendance.
Early Help extends support to the family. Linden can help with parenting, nutrition and diet, mental health and welfare, and school applications. Parents access this support through the office, giving them a starting point when difficulties affect home life or their child’s participation in school.
Reception admission. Attending Linden’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority through nursery attendance. Families must make a separate Reception application through Leicester City Council’s online school admissions portal and meet the normal application deadline. Nursery admission and school admission are separate decisions.
Preparation for the next stage is a different matter. In November 2024, early years teaching developed children’s language, attention and cooperation, helping them prepare for subsequent learning. Those educational benefits should be considered separately from the allocation of a Reception place.
Most nursery places are part-time: a three-hour morning or afternoon session, five days a week. Full-time places are also offered. The distinction matters when matching attendance to family routines.
