Woods, a trim-trail and a classroom with its own outdoor learning space give Martinshaw Preschool a day that can stretch well beyond the tables. Children start at three, in the nursery provision attached to Martinshaw Primary School in Groby. The setting is teacher-led, with access to the school’s sports hall and playing field as well as its woodland. Those shared spaces add room for movement and exploration to the preschool’s own indoor and outdoor areas.
Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions give families different ways to arrange attendance. The preschool aims to help children become independent and confident before their move to school.
Children can move between indoor activities and outdoor play throughout the day. This free-flow arrangement gives them scope to choose where to explore, rather than keeping outdoor learning to a single break. A large classroom provides the indoor base; the preschool’s own outdoor area and access to the woods extend the possibilities.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes teaching. In parent terms, it combines learning to communicate, move and manage feelings with early reading, number work, creativity and discovering how the world works. Activities are adapted to children’s interests and needs, so the framework allows individual starting points rather than a single task for everyone.
In July 2024, Ofsted found preschool children learning a weekly sound, while early-years activities included woodland picnics, preparing sticks for marshmallow toasting and a working-farm visit. These examples connect early learning with practical experiences beyond the classroom.
Diddi Dance is an optional, discounted class for children attending on Tuesday mornings, booked directly with the provider. Ribbons, hoops and dancing games bring movement and rhythm into that session. Little Cooks offers discounted weekly cooking sessions on different days, giving preschool children practice preparing healthy food.
Each child has a key worker who looks after their care and learning needs and keeps in regular contact with parents. That gives families a consistent person with whom to discuss development and wellbeing. In July 2024, preschool children parted readily from their carers and began their activities promptly, a reassuring picture of how they were settling at that point.
Tapestry records children’s learning, with a focus-week observation each half term. Photographs, achievements and next steps help parents understand what to support at home; families can contribute their own entries too. Class Dojo carries preschool notices and event information.
A qualified SENCo supports the preschool team. The setting aims to work with families and local services around individual needs, making that partnership part of its inclusion approach. Snacks and meals sit outside session fees, so families need to account for food separately when considering the day’s arrangements.
Attending Martinshaw Preschool does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Leicestershire Local Authority and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step from arranging preschool attendance.
Preparation for school focuses on communication, social skills and independence. The preschool aims to support transition to each child’s chosen school, with emphasis on familiarity with new routines and teachers understanding children’s interests and needs. This preparation concerns readiness for the next stage; it does not secure admission.
The preschool opens Monday to Friday, from 08:30 to 15:30. Morning sessions finish at 12:30, when afternoon sessions begin. Families can also choose a full day. Optional drop-off at 08:50 and collection at 15:10 provide alternative handover times.
Funding starts in the term after a child’s third birthday. The funded entitlement is 570 hours, usually taken as up to 15 hours weekly across 38 weeks; eligible working parents can receive 30 hours weekly for up to 38 weeks. A birth certificate is required to secure funding. Preschool term dates can differ slightly from the main school’s because claimable sessions vary between terms.
Charges apply where funding is not received, with invoices issued each half term and payment due in advance. Ask the school for current charges. To enquire or arrange a preschool visit, email preschool@martinshaw.leics.sch.uk.
