Nursery at Mellor Community Primary School

Songs, stories and toy cars give Mellor’s nursery learning a concrete shape. Super Sounds introduces phonics through play, while comparing groups of cars turns early number work into something children can see and handle. These are useful examples of how learning takes shape before formal school lessons.
The nursery belongs to Mellor Community Primary School on Checketts Road in Leicester. Its teaching team includes two nursery teachers, one combining that role with an assistant headteacher position. Nursery children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum within the school.
Super Sounds phase 1 phonics uses games, songs and a focus story for the week. That gives children different ways to engage with early sound work: listening to a story, joining a song and taking part in a game. The emphasis is on learning through activities children can participate in.
Number learning is equally tangible. In February 2026, nursery children explored numbers 1–3 and practised writing them on new chalk boards. In November 2025, groups of toy cars helped children compare quantities using the ideas of more and less. One activity connects numbers with making marks; the other gives a visible meaning to comparison.
Shared reading also forms part of the EYFS experience. Children read big books together with their teacher, discuss what happens and predict what might come next. This brings vocabulary and understanding into the same activity, giving children opportunities to talk about a story as well as listen to it.
For a child with special educational needs, the school office is the first contact, with enquiries directed to the SENCO. A deputy headteacher holds the SENCO role. This gives families a clear route for raising their child’s needs with the school’s inclusion leadership.
Mellor also offers Early Help for children and families when difficulties begin to emerge. The school aims to get support to families promptly, before problems require statutory services.
Caterlink provides the school’s meals, which are largely prepared fresh on site with seasonal ingredients sourced locally and regionally. School meal orders and payments go through Weduc. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a description of a nursery lunch session.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions.
Mellor’s school admission arrangements follow Leicester City Council regulations. Familiarity with the school through nursery attendance should therefore never be treated as confirmation of a Reception offer.
Email office@mellor.leicester.sch.uk for school enquiries. Mellor is on Checketts Road, Leicester, LE4 5EQ.
The school’s clothing rules allow plain tops in the required colours instead of a Mellor logo. Sweatshirts and cardigans can be blue or black; trousers, skirts and tunics can also be grey. Clothing and equipment should carry a name label, helping staff return misplaced belongings to the right child.
