Free movement between the playroom and an enclosed outdoor area gives Millfield Community Nursery its defining feature: children can take their learning outside as part of a session. This is a sessional pre-school within Millfield L.E.A.D. Academy, with its own nursery room in the Foundation Stage unit. The nursery has operated since 1996 and usually welcomes children in the term following their third birthday.
For families choosing a first experience of school, that combination matters: a nursery space of its own, alongside the school's Foundation Stage.
The main room is accompanied by a kitchen area and toilets. Outdoors, children have both grass and a hard-surfaced play space that is covered and enclosed. These are different places for play, rather than one outdoor surface serving every purpose. Access between indoors and outdoors is free-flow, so outdoor activity is part of the nursery's learning environment.
Activities and resources are provided on both sides of that doorway. The nursery aims to encourage creativity and active learning through them. For a parent, the practical distinction is the opportunity to use indoor and outdoor spaces within the same session, rather than treating outside time as a separate destination.
Morning and afternoon sessions each occupy three hours. That gives the day a clear shape for children attending one session, while eligible children can stay over lunchtime between the two.
The nursery describes its staff as very experienced and aims to make children feel welcome and safe. Its team works closely with the school's Foundation Stage, linking the nursery provision with the staff supporting the next stage of early education.
Children entitled to 30 hours can remain for lunch, with an additional charge. This is a conditional arrangement: families using that entitlement can bridge the gap between sessions through the lunchtime stay. The nursery manager is the contact for further details about this arrangement and its current charge.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Millfield. Children do not transfer automatically: parents must make a separate application through Leicestershire County Council's school admissions route. The council then sends the school-place offer directly to the family.
The nursery's close working relationship with the Foundation Stage is separate from that application. Familiarity with the school and contact between teams should not be mistaken for a secured place. Keep the Reception application as a distinct task when planning your child's next step.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Use these nursery times when planning collection and other childcare. The lunchtime stay for children entitled to 30 hours sits between those sessions and carries its own charge.
For nursery admission enquiries, telephone 0116 289 7151. The academy also welcomes enquiries and visits arranged in advance, giving families a route to discuss the setting before making a decision.
