Nursery at Montrose School

Stories, purposeful learning and support within the wider school give Montrose's nursery its character. For children aged 3 to 4, this is the nursery provision at Montrose School on Wigston Lane in Aylestone, Leicester.
The early years provision received a Good judgement at Ofsted's inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The school site includes modern buildings and a large field, placing the nursery within a school with substantial outdoor grounds.
Books give a concrete picture of nursery learning. Children encounter non-fiction alongside stories and poetry, introducing different ways of listening to language and exploring ideas. Nursery is included in this reading provision, so books are part of the experience from the beginning of a child's time at Montrose.
In October 2024, early years children were developing their knowledge through activities with a clear learning purpose, supported by skilled adults. The emphasis was on helping children extend what they already understood. This gives families a useful picture of learning guided by adults, rather than simply time spent occupied.
Outdoor learning is part of the wider school's provision, with its large field a physical feature of the grounds. The school aims to adapt learning to children's abilities and needs. For a nursery family, that aim makes the connection between everyday activities and the individual child's development an important part of the provision's character.
Settling was a strength in October 2024: early years children became comfortable quickly. That matters for children beginning their first school experience, when feeling secure with adults is part of being ready to learn.
For children needing additional help, the school's support structure includes Early Years Support. Teachers and teaching assistants provide most support within the classroom, with the SENDCo involved in planning and reviewing provision. The school can also seek advice from the Early Years Support Team and Speech and Language Therapy Team, connecting classroom support with specialist expertise when needed.
Parents contribute their knowledge of their child to support planning. Meetings with teachers or the SENDCo take place termly to discuss progress and targets, and parental consent is sought before referrals to outside agencies. Class Dojo carries class news, while regular newsletters arrive by email. A full-time family support worker also helps families with concerns including behaviour and medical issues.
A separate application matters. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority in its own right. Families must apply again through Leicester Education Authority, with allocation handled by the Schools Admissions Team. The sibling criterion excludes siblings attending only the nursery.
Parent meetings, transition afternoons and themed days let children become familiar with the next year group's staff and surroundings. Children with particular needs can have individual transfer books, giving them another way to prepare for the change. These activities support familiarity; they do not determine admission.
Morning nursery runs from 8.35am to 11.35am, Monday to Friday. Afternoon sessions for 30-hour places run from 11.20am to 3.05pm, Monday to Thursday. The different pattern across the week matters when planning collection and family routines.
Nursery applications go directly to the school using an online form, or a completed form can be emailed or returned by post. For enquiries, contact the office at office@montrose.leicester.sch.uk or telephone 0116 2832328.
