Listening comes before reading at Whitehall’s nursery. Children develop their ability to distinguish sounds, giving this first stage of school life a clear purpose: preparing them for the learning that follows. Vocabulary matters too, with words chosen deliberately from Nursery onwards to help children express their ideas.
This is the nursery provision within Whitehall Primary School, a state primary on Whitehall Road in Leicester. At the inspection on 8 and 9 May 2024, Ofsted judged early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Sound discrimination and listening are concrete parts of nursery learning here. The emphasis is on hearing differences between sounds and developing attention before children move on to Reception. For parents, this gives a useful picture of the foundations being built: the preparation for reading begins with listening skills.
Language learning extends beyond those early sound skills. In May 2024, vocabulary was selected carefully from Nursery onwards, helping children, including those learning English as an additional language, become more confident in explaining their learning. The practical value is communication: having the words to describe an idea helps a child take part in learning and make their thinking understood.
Mathematics also begins within the early years and continues through the school. Together, these strands give the nursery a place within a longer learning sequence, with early language and mathematical learning forming the starting point.
Settling into school routines was a strength of early years provision in May 2024. Children became comfortable quickly and learnt the routines expected of them. For a family considering a first school experience, that finding matters alongside the learning: becoming familiar with routines is part of the early years experience here.
Consistency across the school. In May 2024, some school policies left expectations insufficiently clear, resulting in uneven practice. The required improvement was to make policies and processes clearer and more consistent. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding specifically about nursery settling, but it qualifies the wider picture of the school in which the nursery operates.
Attending Whitehall’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for a school place are distinct decisions.
The nursery’s work on listening and distinguishing sounds prepares children for Reception learning. That educational preparation should be understood separately from admission: developing the skills for the next stage does not secure a place in the Reception class.
Nursery enquiries go through the school office. For families ready to explore joining, this is the direct contact route at Whitehall Primary School.
The school allows uniform both with its logo and without it, and asks families to label clothing clearly with their child’s name. The logo is therefore optional under the school’s uniform rule, giving parents a choice when buying school clothing.
No. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process.
